The Battle of Nanticoke Creek was a small skirmish fought on November 13, 1813, near Nanticoke, Ontario, Canada, during the War of 1812. Background With the American successes at the Battle of Lake Erie and the Battle of the Thames in the autumn of 1813, the majority of the Western District, Upper Canada, Western and London District, Upper Canada, London Districts were under American occupation. British forces had retreated to consolidate their lines of defence around Burlington Heights (Ontario)#War of 1812, Burlington Heights. The local Canadian militias were left to defend themselves, and militiamen were often persecuted by the occupying Americans. The lack of proper military governance led to wide-scale raiding and skirmishing along the Niagara frontier in late 1813, and many American sympathizers living in Upper Canada gave aid to these raiders. The War of 1812 (18 June 1812 – 17 February 1815) was fought by the United States of America and its indigenous allies against the United Kingdom and its allies in British North America, with limited participation by Spain in Florida. It began when the United States declared war on 18 June 1812 and, although peace terms were agreed upon in the December 1814 Treaty of Ghent, did not officially end until the peace treaty was ratified by Congress on 17 February 1815.
