Battle Of Damascus (2012)
The Battle of Damascus ( ar, معركة دمشق), also known as Operation Damascus Volcano ( ar, عملية بركان دمشق), started on 15 July 2012 during the Syrian civil war. It is unclear who started the battle. Thousands of rebels infiltrated Damascus from the surrounding countryside. Following this, according to some reports, the opposition forces launched an operation to capture the capital, while according to other reports, the military learned of the large-scale rebel operation beforehand and made a preemptive strike. Some reports even suggested the rebels launched the operation prematurely due to their plans being discovered by the security forces. After the rebels initially captured half a dozen districts and killed four high-ranking government ministers in a bombing, opposition forces were forced to retreat following a military counter-attack, leaving the army in control of the capital after three weeks of fighting. The Central Bank of Syria (CBS; ar, مصرف سورية المركزي, translit=Masrif Suriat Almarkazi) is the central bank of Syria. The bank was established in 1953 and started operations in 1956. Its headquarters are in Damascus, with 11 branches in the provincial capitals. Sabaa Bahrat Square ( ar, ساحة السبع بحرات / ALA-LC: ''sāḥat as-Saba‘a Baḥrāt''; which means "square of the Seven Fountains") is a large and important square in Damascus, Syria. Many important official buildings and ministries are located in the area including the Central Bank of Syria. Many important streets branch from there including Baghdad Street. It was first erected by French mandate authorities in 1925 in memory of a French captain called Gaston Descarpentries. The 4th Armoured Division ( ar, الفرقة الرابعة, al-Firqa ar-Rābiʿah) is an elite formation of the Syrian Army whose primary purpose is to defend the Syrian government from internal and external threats.
