Battle Of Cape Machichaco
The battle of Cape Machichaco was a naval battle which took place on 5 March 1937 off Bermeo, during the Spanish Civil War, between the Spanish Nationalist heavy cruiser and four Basque Navy trawlers escorting a Republican convoy. The trawlers were protecting the transport ship ''Galdames'', which was sailing to Bilbao with 173 passengers. Prelude On 4 March, four armed trawlers of the Basque Auxiliary Navy section of the Spanish Republican Navy, ''Bizcaya'', ''Gipuzkoa'', ''Donostia'' and ''Nabarra'' departed from Bayonne, France. Their intention was to defend ''Galdames''s mail, passengers, machinery, weapons, supplies and 500 tons of nickel coins property of the Basque government. War In The North
The War in the North was the campaign of the Spanish Civil War in which the Nationalist forces defeated and occupied the parts of northern Spain that had remained loyal to the Republican government. The campaign included several separate battles. The Biscay Campaign resulted in the loss of the part of the Basque Country still held by the Republic and Bilbao, the greatest Spanish industrial centre. That part of the campaign saw the Bombing of Guernica and Durango. The Battle of Santander caused the loss of the province of Santander in Cantabrian Castile for the Republic. The Battle of El Mazuco led to the capture of the Republican-controlled part of Asturias and the fall of Gijón, the Republic's last northern stronghold, to the Nationalists. Manuel Carrasco Formiguera
Manuel Carrasco i Formiguera (3 April 1890 – 9 April 1938), was a Spanish lawyer and Christian democracy, Christian democrat Catalan nationalist politician. His execution, by order of Francisco Franco, provoked protests from Catholic journalists such as Joseph Ageorges, the President of the International Federation of Catholic Journalists. Ageorges wrote, "''Even more than the death of the Louis Antoine, Duke of Enghien, Duke of Enghien stained the memory of Napoleon, the death of Carrasco has stained the reputation of Franco''". Such protests, in turn, provoked the anger of the Francoist press.
