Battle Of Okinawa (film)
is a 1971 Japanese war film directed by Kihachi Okamoto from a screenplay by Kaneto Shindo and Ryōzō Kasahara, with effects by Teruyoshi Nakano. Release ''Battle of Okinawa'' received a roadshow theatrical release released on 17 July 1971 in Japan. It received a general release in Japan on 14 August 1971. The film was Toho's highest-grossing film of the year, and the fourth highest grossing domestic release of the year in Japan. The film was released theatrically in the United States by Min-On of America with a 149-minute running time on 11 September 1973. Kihachi Okamoto
was a Japanese film director who worked in several different genres. Career Born in Yonago, Okamoto attended Meiji University, but was drafted into the Air Force 1943 and entered World War II, an experience that had a profound effect on his later film work, one third of which dealt with war. Finally graduating after the war, he entered the Toho studies in 1947 and worked as an assistant under such directors as Mikio Naruse, Masahiro Makino, Ishirō Honda, and Senkichi Taniguchi. He made his debut as a director in 1958 with '' All About Marriage''. Okamoto directed almost 40 films and wrote the scripts for at least 24, in a career that spanned almost six decades. He worked in a variety of genres, but most memorably in action genres such as the jidaigeki and war films. He was known for making films with a twist. Keijyu Kobayashi
was a Japanese actor who appeared in 253 films in a career spanning 67 years. Born in Gunma Prefecture, he began acting at the Nikkatsu studio after dropping out of Nihon University and made his film debut in 1942. In 1956 he moved to Toho film company. In a career that spanned 65 years, he appeared in over 250 films, most famously in the "Company President" (Shachō) comedy films made at Toho, where he worked alongside Hisaya Morishige, Daisuke Katō, Norihei Miki, and others. There he helped define the popular image of the postwar salaryman. Akira Shimada
was the last governor of Okinawa Prefecture before Japan's defeat in 1945. He died during the Battle of Okinawa. Early years Born in Suma-ku, Kobe in 1901, Akira Shimada was the first-born son of a physician. He studied in the Department of Law at Tokyo University. In college, he was a baseball star and rugby player. After graduating, he joined the Ministry of Interior Affairs as a law enforcement official. was a Japanese actor. Career Born in Kure, Hiroshima, Kōyama joined the Bungakuza theatre troupe in 1952, first as a directorial assistant and then as an actor. Yūsuke Kawazu
was a Japanese actor. Life and career Kawazu was born in Tokyo on 12 May 1935. While still a student at Keio University, Kawazu signed with Shochiku in 1958 and debuted in Kinoshita's ''The Eternal Rainbow''. Hiromichi Yahara
was the senior staff officer in charge of operations of the 32nd Japanese Army at Okinawa during the American invasion of that island during World War II. Defense of Okinawa Yahara, who had taught strategy at the Army War College, was assigned to Okinawa prior to the anticipated American invasion to organize its pre-invasion strategy. His recommended strategy for fighting the American invaders was to continue to tie up the American military as long as possible in a war of attrition (jikyūsen, 持久戦), so that the rumored American invasion of Kyūshū, Japan, would be delayed, thereby allowing Kyushu defenders more time to better prepare their defenses.
