Batesville Confederate Monument
The Batesville Confederate Monument is located at the southeast corner of Main and Broad Streets in Batesville, Arkansas. It is a square monument, about in height, divided into four stages, and built out of local limestone. The first three-stage have a base trim element, and are unadorned except for inscriptions. The divider between the first and second stages is a projecting shelf, while that above the second and third stages resembles a turreted battlement. The monument was placed in 1907 by local chapters of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. The monument was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. United Daughters Of The Confederacy
The United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) is an American neo-Confederate hereditary association for female descendants of Confederate Civil War soldiers engaging in the commemoration of these ancestors, the funding of monuments to them, and the promotion of the pseudohistorical Lost Cause ideology and corresponding white supremacy. Established in Nashville, Tennessee in 1894, the group venerated the Ku Klux Klan during the first half of the 20th century and funded the construction of a monument to the Klan in 1926. According to the Institute for Southern Studies, the UDC "elevated he Klanto a nearly mythical status. It dealt in and preserved Klan artifacts and symbology. It even served as a sort of public relations agency for the terrorist group."
