Bates Turner
Bates Turner (October 1760 – April 30, 1847) was a Vermont lawyer, judge and politician. In addition to serving as a member of the Vermont House of Representatives, he was a justice of the Vermont Supreme Court for two years. Biography Turner was born in October 1760 in what would become Canaan, Connecticut. He served in the Continental Army as a member of Captain Thomas Converse's Company, 7th Connecticut Regiment during the American Revolutionary War. In 1780, he graduated from the Litchfield Law School. Turner practiced law in Connecticut, and moved to Vermont in 1798; he originally resided in Fairfield, and later in St. Albans. For a time, his law partner in St. Albans was Asa Aldis, who subsequently served as chief justice of the Vermont Supreme Court. Vermont House Of Representatives
The Vermont House of Representatives is the lower house of the Vermont General Assembly, the state legislature of the U.S. state of Vermont. The House comprises 150 members, with each member representing around 4,100 citizens. Representatives are elected to a two-year term without term limits. Vermont had a unicameral legislature until 1836. It added a senate by constitutional amendment. The House meets in Representatives Hall at the Vermont State House in Montpelier. It is the only U.S. state legislature whose debating chamber seating layout comes closer to that of the Westminster-style parliament found elsewhere. Josiah Turner (judge)
Josiah Turner (September 1, 1811 – April 7, 1907) was a Michigan pioneer and Supreme Court judge. Turner was born in New Haven, Vermont on September 1, 1811. In 1831, Turner moved to St. Albans, Vermont, to read law with his uncle, Bates Turner, a former Vermont Supreme Court justice. In September 1833 he was admitted to the Vermont bar and then practiced law. In 1840, Turner and his wife moved to Howell, Michigan. Turner served as a Michigan circuit judge. In 1857, Turner was appointed to the Michigan Supreme Court. Turner was involved with the Republican Party. In 1860 Turner and his family to Owosso, Michigan. In April 1864 he was elected Mayor of Owosso. He informed the people of Owosso about the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln in 1865. The Wisconsin State Assembly is the lower house of the Wisconsin Legislature. Together with the smaller Wisconsin Senate, the two constitute the legislative branch of the U.S. state of Wisconsin. Representatives are elected for two-year terms, elected during the fall elections. If a vacancy occurs in an Assembly seat between elections, it may be filled only by a special election. The Wisconsin Constitution limits the size of the State Assembly to between 54 and 100 members inclusive. Since 1973, the state has been divided into 99 Assembly districts apportioned amongst the state based on population as determined by the decennial census, for a total of 99 representatives. Wolcott Turner Brooks
Wolcott Turner Brooks (October 6, 1826 – April 26, 1901) was a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly. Biography Brooks was born on October 6, 1826, in New Haven, Vermont. He was a relative of the Michigan Supreme Court Justice Josiah Turner, and the Vermont House of Representatives member and Vermont Supreme Court Justice Bates Turner. Eventually, he moved to Fond du Lac County, then in the Wisconsin Territory. On May 31, 1853, Brooks married Gertrude Sanderson. They had two children. Brooks and his wife briefly lived in Fond du Lac town, before moving to Byron, Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin. In 1864, they settled in Waupun, Wisconsin Waupun is a city in Dodge County, Wisconsin, Dodge and Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin, Fond du Lac counties in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The Michigan Supreme Court is the highest court in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is Michigan's court of last resort and consists of seven justices.
