Christopher Michael Bate FRS (born 21 December 1943) is an Emeritus Professor of developmental biology at the Department of Zoology and fellow at King's College, Cambridge. The son of John Gordon Bate, M.B. Ch.B., an R.A.F. doctor, of Holmbury St Mary, Dorking, his paternal grandfather was Herbert Bate, Dean of York 1932–41. His mother, Rachel Denise, was daughter of Samuel Ronald Courthope Bosanquet, KC, recorder of Walsall, Chancellor of the Diocese of Hertford; a great-uncle on the maternal side, William Temple, was Archbishop of Canterbury from 1942 to 1944. Dame Zara Kate Bate (; previously Fell and Holt; 10 March 190914 June 1989) was an Australian fashion entrepreneur. She was best known as the wife of Harold Holt, who was prime minister of Australia from 1966 until his disappearance in 1967. Early life Bate was born Zara Kate Dickins on 10 March 1909 at her parents' home in Kew, Victoria. She was the second of four children born to Violet () and Sydney Dickins. William Thornton Bate (31 January 1818 – 29 December 1857) was a British Royal Navy officer and surveyor. He served in First Anglo-Chinese War and Second Anglo-Chinese War. He died during the Battle of Canton in 1857. Early life Bate was born in 1818, the son of the Governor of Ascension Island. He entered the Royal Naval College in Portsmouth at the age of 13, spending two years studying there.Rogers 1867, pp. 151–162 He was then appointed as a midshipman aboard HMS ''Isis'', and sailed with her to the Cape of Good Hope. Stanley Bate (12 December 1911 – 19 October 1959) was an English composer and pianist. Life Bate was born in Milehouse, Devonshire, a suburb of Plymouth, and received his first musical education from local teachers. He took to the piano early and by the age of 12 had secured a post as organist at Herbert Street Methodist Church in Devonport. His work focuses on solving the problem of counterfeit and substandard medicines, particularly those in the developing world. Michael Bate (born c. 1947) is a Canadian media entrepreneur and one of the founders of the Ottawa edition of gossip magazine '' Frank''. Born in England, he grew up in Canada, attending the University of Victoria in 1965, and later studying history at Carleton. Bate was a long time Ottawa musician (pedal steel guitar) who worked as a radio producer and as a computer games developer (working on such titles as B.C.'s Quest for Tires, B.C. II: Grog's Revenge, and Ace of Aces). He also worked as a reporter for Canadian Press.
