Batanagar
Batanagar is a neighbourhood in the Maheshtala of the South 24 Parganas district in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is a part of the area covered by the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA). History Batanagar was established to start the first shoe factory in India by Czechoslovak industrialist Tomáš Baťa. The Bata brand was established on 24 August 1894 in Zlín, then in Austria-Hungary (now in Czech Republic). The company first established itself in India in 1931 by renting a building to start an experimental shoe production plant in Konnagar with 75 Czechoslovak experts. Jan Antonín Baťa then built up an industrial manufacturing city called Batanagar in 1934, as well as other factories in Delhi and Patna and elsewhere in India, employing more than 7,000 people. Budge Budge
Budge Budge () is a town and a municipality of the South 24 Parganas district in the Indian States and territories of India, state of West Bengal. It is situated on the eastern banks of the Hooghly River. It is a part of the area covered by the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA). It is the place where Swami Vivekananda landed (1897) on after returning from Parliament of the World's Religions in Chicago. Also, the Komagata Maru incident (1914), a significant event against British empire happened here. Konnagar
Konnagar is a town and a municipality of Hooghly district in the state of West Bengal in India. Konnagar has a railway station that connect with Howrah. It is under Uttarpara police station in Serampore subdivision. It is a part of the area covered by Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA). History In 1931, Tomas Bata, the Czech shoe tycoon, established his first Indian operation at Konnagar. By 1936, the Konnagar plan was phased out. In May 1931, Tomas sold his business interests to his brother Jan Antonin Bata who established Batanagar, Bata's first permanent shoe factory in India. Jan Antonín Baťa
Jan Antonín Baťa (March 7, 1898 – August 23, 1965) (also known as ''Jan Antonin Bata'' or ''Jan Bata'', called The King of Shoes) was a Czech- Brazilian shoe manufacturer from Uherské Hradiště (southeastern Moravia), half-brother of Tomáš Baťa. Together with American experts, he participated in the First Prague International Management Congress (PIMCO) in July 1924 in Prague, organized by the Masaryk Academy of Labour. After the death of his half-brother in 1932, who had founded the firm, Jan Antonin Baťa headed the Baťa company. In 1931 he converted it to a joint stock company, Baťa a.s., still based in Zlín, former Czechoslovakia. Bata's administration began in May 1931. Tomáš Baťa
Tomáš Baťa () (3 April 1876 – 12 July 1932) was a Czech entrepreneur and founder of the Bata shoe company. His career was cut short when he died in a plane accident due to bad weather. His half-brother Jan Antonín Baťa took over his company, expanding it during the Great Depression. World War II resulted in much destruction of his businesses. After Communist governments were established in Czechoslovakia and other nations of Eastern Europe, they nationalized the Baťa enterprises, taking over the company. Tomáš's son Thomas J. Bata rebuilt and expanded shoe manufacturing in the company name after moving to Canada in 1939, at the time of the Nazi invasion and annexation of Czechoslovakia. Career Tomáš Baťa established the organization in Zlín on 24 August 1894 with 800 Austrian gulden (equivalent to $320 at the time), inherited from his mother.
