Bastille Day (song)
"Bastille Day" is a song by the Canadian rock band Rush, and is the opening track from their third album, ''Caress of Steel''. Like most Rush songs, the music was written by Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson, and the lyrics by Neil Peart. The song uses the storming of the Bastille, which began the French Revolution, as an allegory for revolutionary fervor needed in the struggle against tyrannical government. "Bastille Day" was played as the opening number at Rush's concerts for several years following its release. Live versions of the song appear on the albums ''All the World's a Stage'' and '' Different Stages''. The last time it was performed live was in 1981, but an instrumental section was played during the '' R30 Tour'' as part of the " R30 Overture," which opened concerts on that tour. Rush (band)
Rush was a Canadian rock band formed in 1968 in Toronto, that was comprised primarily of Geddy Lee (bass, vocals), Alex Lifeson (guitar), and Neil Peart (drums, percussion, lyricist). The band formed in Toronto in 1968 by Lifeson, drummer John Rutsey, and bass guitarist/vocalist Jeff Jones, who was immediately replaced by Lee. After Lee joined, the band went through several lineup configurations before arriving at its classic power trio lineup with the addition of Peart in July 1974, who replaced Rutsey four months after the release of their 1974 self-titled debut album; this lineup remained intact for the remainder of the band's career. ''Different Stages'' is a live album by Canadian rock band Rush, released in 1998. The bulk of the first and second discs were recorded at the World Music Theatre in Tinley Park, Illinois during the 1997 ''Test for Echo'' tour. Five other songs from various stops along the tour were included and three songs from the 1994 ''Counterparts'' tour. The third disc is taken from a performance at the Hammersmith Odeon in London during the ''A Farewell to Kings'' tour in 1978. The album was compiled and released by lead singer and bassist Geddy Lee and producer Paul Northfield in the wake of the deaths of drummer Neil Peart's daughter and first wife in 1997 and 1998, respectively. Production of the album occurred during Peart's recovery from his loss as chronicled in his book '' Ghost Rider: Travels on the Healing Road'', and he was consequently not involved in the production of the album. Michael Stephen Portnoy (born April 20, 1967) is an American musician who is primarily known as the former drummer, backing vocalist, and co-founder of the progressive metal band Dream Theater. In September 2010, Portnoy announced his departure from Dream Theater after 25 years, with Mike Mangini taking his place as drummer of the band. Dream Theater
Dream Theater is an American progressive metal band formed in 1985 under the name Majesty by John Petrucci, John Myung and Mike Portnoy while they attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts.
