English Language
English is a West Germanic language of the Indo-European language family, with its earliest forms spoken by the inhabitants of early medieval England. Arthur Bassett (rugby Player)
Arthur Bassett (28 June 1914 – 30 December 1999) was a Welsh dual-code international rugby union, and professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1930s and 1940s. He played representative level rugby union (RU) for Wales, and at club level for Maesteg, Neath, Glamorgan Police RFC, Aberavon RFC, Cardiff, switching to professional rugby football in 1939. Richard Bassett (clergyman)
Richard Bassett (7 November 1777 – 31 August 1852) was a Welsh cleric, thought to be the last Anglican clergyman in Wales to be associated with the Methodists. Life Bassett was born at Tresigin, near Llantwit Major in Glamorgan, South Wales. After studying at Cowbridge Grammar School, Bassett went to Jesus College, Oxford, matriculating in 1797, but never graduating. He was ordained deacon in 1801 and priest in 1802, becoming curate of St Athan and Llandow in Glamorgan; in all, he spent over thirty years as a curate. In 1832, he became rector of Eglwys Brewis and, in 1843, vicar of Colwinston. Bassett was friends with the evangelical cleric William Howels, and through him met the Methodist cleric David Jones of Llangan. Christopher Bassett
Christopher Bassett (1753 – 8 February 1784) was a Welsh Methodist cleric. Life Bassett was born in Aberthaw, Glamorgan, Wales to Christopher and Alice Bassett, both followers of Howell Harris (one of the leaders of the Welsh Methodist revival). After studying at Cowbridge Grammar School, Bassett went to Jesus College, Oxford, matriculating in 1768. He obtained a B.A. degree in 1772, adding a M.A. degree in 1775. He was ordained by Richard Terrick, the Bishop of London, and was a curate under William Romaine at St Ann Blackfriars in London. However, health problems caused him to return to Wales, where he became successively curate at St. Fagans and Porthkerry in Glamorgan, establishing Methodist societies in both places, and preaching to Methodists throughout South Wales. He travelled to his sister's house in Bristol in 1783 when his health worsened, and he died there of tuberculosis on 8 February 1784. Richard Basset
Richard Basset (died between 1135 and 1144) was a royal judge and sheriff during the reign of King Henry I of England. His father was also a royal justice. In about 1122 Basset married the eventual heiress of another justice; the marriage settlement has survived. In 1129–30 Basset was co-sheriff of eleven counties. Basset and his wife founded a monastic house in 1125 from their lands, which before the donation were equivalent to 15 knight's fees. Early life Basset was the son of Ralph Basset,Keats-Rohan ''Domesday Descendants'' p. 166 who was a royal justice under Henry I. While it is not known whether Richard was Ralph's eldest son, Richard inherited Ralph's estates in Normandy, which were near Montreuil-au-Houlme. Richard Bassett (April 2, 1745 – September 15, 1815) was an American politician, attorney, slave owner and later abolitionist, veteran of the American Revolution, attorney, signer of the United States Constitution, and one of the Founding Fathers of America. He also served as United States Senator from Delaware, chief justice of the Delaware Court of Common Pleas, governor of Delaware and a United States circuit judge of the United States Circuit Court for the Third Circuit. Ralph Basset (sometimes Bassett; died c. 1127) was a medieval English royal justice during the reign of King Henry I of England. He was a native of Normandy, and may have come to Henry's notice while Henry held land in Normandy prior to becoming king. Basset is first mentioned in documents about 1102, and from then until his death around 1127, he was frequently employed as a royal justice. His son Richard Basset also became a royal judge. Michael Edward Rainton Bassett (born 28 August 1938) is a former New Zealand Labour Party, Labour Party member of the New Zealand House of Representatives and cabinet minister in the reformist Fourth Labour Government of New Zealand, fourth Labour government. Mabel Luella Bourne Bassett (August 16, 1876 – August 2, 1953) was a Democratic Oklahoma politician who served as the state's Commissioner of Charities and Corrections from 1923 until 1947. Early life Mabel Bourne was born in Chicago, the daughter of Stephen Bourne and Martha E. Yourlin Bourne. She graduated from high school in Billings, Montana. She lived in Trinidad, Colorado as a young woman, and moved to Sapulpa, Oklahoma in 1902. She took courses at the Missouri School of Social Work in St. Louis. Isabel Bassett (born August 23, 1939) is a Canadian broadcaster and former politician. From 1999 until 2005 she was the chair and CEO of TVOntario/TFO, Ontario's provincial public television network. She has been a controversial figure at times, but is also a highly regarded pioneer in Canadian broadcasting. Background Bassett was born Isabel Glenthorne Macdonald in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
