Basse-Terre (, ; ; gcf, label=Guadeloupean Creole, Bastè, ) is a commune in the French overseas department of Guadeloupe, in the Lesser Antilles. It is also the ''prefecture'' (capital city) of Guadeloupe. The city of Basse-Terre is located on Basse-Terre Island, the western half of Guadeloupe. Although it is the administrative capital, Basse-Terre is only the second largest city in Guadeloupe behind Pointe-à-Pitre. Together with its urban area it had 44,864 inhabitants in 2012 (11,534 of whom lived in the city of Basse-Terre proper). Geography Basse-Terre is located in the south-western corner of the Basse-Terre portion of the island of Guadeloupe which is itself located some 100 km north of Dominica and some 450 km south-east of Puerto Rico. Vieux-Habitants (French for ''Old Inhabitants'') is a commune on Guadeloupe, a French overseas department in the Caribbean. It is located on the southwest coast of the island of Basse-Terre. History This is the oldest parish, founded in 1636, when the first French settlers inhabited the west coast near the present site of Vieux Habitants. The name, meaning "Old Settlers" derives from the fact that many employees of the West Indies Company retired here and preferred to be called "inhabitants" to distinguish between themselves and the slaves. It grew gradually as an agricultural area, famous for its coffee, vanilla and Creole gardens. Jean Du Plessis D'Ossonville
Jean du Plessis, sieur d’Ossonville (died 4 December 1635) was a joint leader of the French expedition that established a colony on the island of Guadeloupe in 1635. He died on the island after less than six months. Background Jean du Plessis was a gentleman from Picardy. He was the seigneur d’Ossonville, an advocate in Dieppe and a distant relative of Cardinal Richelieu (Armand Jean du Plessis). Charles Liénard, sieur de L'Olive ( – 1643) was a French colonial leader who was the first governor of Guadeloupe. Food loss and waste is food that is not eaten. The causes of food waste or loss are numerous and occur throughout the food system, during production, processing, distribution, retail and food service sales, and consumption.
