Bass Lake is a census-designated place in Madera County, California, United States. It is located southeast of Yosemite Forks, at an elevation of . The population was 575 at the 2020 census. Bass Lake is situated in the Sierra National Forest approximately from the south entrance of Yosemite National Park. Established in 1895 as "Bass Lake Village", the community grew up around the newly created Bass Lake reservoir that supplied the first hydroelectric generating project in Central California. Much of the community and the reservoir is devoted to the tourism industry. The original post office at Bass Lake opened in 1912. Bass Lake is a small lake in the southern portion of the Point Reyes National Seashore, northwest of Bolinas. The lake sits at an elevation of and flows out south to the ocean via a creek. Bass Lake is the largest of the five Coast Trail Lakes, which also include Pelican Lake, Crystal Lake, Ocean Lake and Wildcat Lake. Geology Much like the other nearby lakes in the southeast portion of the Point Reyes peninsula, Bass Lake occupies a natural synclinal depression formed behind blocks of rock displaced by landslides within the past 10,000 years. The depressions forming Crystal, Pelican and Bass lakes appear to have been caused by the Double Point Slide, which covers an area of about . Bass Lake is an artificial lake in Holly Springs, North Carolina. The lake is owned by the Town of Holly Springs. Bass Lake was purchased in the 1950s by James Harry Cornell, who hosted a fishing club at the private lake. The lake was originally known as Mills Pond. In 1996, Hurricane Fran destroyed Bass Lake Dam and consequently drained the lake; two years later, the Town of Holly Springs purchased the lake site for $230,000. The town rebuilt the dam and restored the lake as a public lake, which opened in 2004. The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission stocks the lake with catfish. Bass Lake is located in the Sierra National Forest, of Madera County, California, approximately south of the entrance to Yosemite National Park. The lake is approximately four miles long and one-half mile wide. The lake is formed by the construction of the Crane Valley Dam across Willow Creek, a tributary to the San Joaquin River, and is referenced as Crane Valley Lake. Releases from the dam drive the hydro-electric powerplant operated by Pacific Gas and Electric Company. The concrete gravity dam was completed in 1910 by Pacific Gas and Electric. Most of the land around the lake is part of the Sierra National Forest. The U.S. Forest Service designated the lake an official Recreation Area and has developed campgrounds and picnic areas on the south shore of the lake.
