Basketball At The 2019 Pacific Games
Basketball is one of the 26 sports scheduled for the 2019 Pacific Games which will be held in Apia, Samoa. Competition format The 8 teams will be split into two pools of four where round-robin matches will be played with the top two from each pool advancing to the semi-finals or the medal play-offs. Qualification For the first time ever, teams would have to qualify for the event in order to participate in the basketball competition either for men or women through sub-zone qualification tournaments in Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia. 2019 Pacific Games
The 2019 Pacific Games was the sixteenth edition of the Pacific Games. The Games were held in Apia, Samoa, returning there for the first time since 2007. It was the third time overall that the Pacific Games were held in Samoa. The event was initially awarded to Nukuʻalofa, Tonga, but the Tongan government officially withdrew from hosting it in May 2017, amid concerns the country could face economic difficulties if it proceeded. These Games included an additional discipline for basketball, which is the 3x3 format, as well as the return of archery and badminton which were not on the 2015 Pacific Games program. Host selection First bidding process In mid 2012, two cities were confirmed as serious bidders in hosting the 2019 Pacific Games. Earvin Jose (born April 6, 1992) is a retired Guamanian basketball player who has represented his tiny island nation internationally, as a member of the Guam national basketball team, and a prominent businessman in his country. He has been described as "a mainstay in Guam basketball." Jose's playing position in basketball was that of guard. Professional basketball career Jose played for the Sushi Rockets team during Guam Basketball Association's 2016 season. In 2017, he played for the Toothfairies side. He also competed at the 2017 Summerjam Day of Champions tournament for the HVK Bulldogs basketball team, where he was the scoring leader of the tournament and led his team to the Men's varsity division title game. 2018 FIBA Women's Polynesia Basketball Cup
The 2018 FIBA Women's Polynesian Basketball Cup was an international basketball tournament contested by national teams of the newly formed Polynesia sub-zone of FIBA Oceania. The inaugural edition of the tournament was hosted by Samoa from 19 to 24 November 2018. Matches were played at the NUS Gymnasium. The tournament serves as qualifiers for the basketball events of the 2019 Pacific Games in Samoa with three berths for Polynesia allocated for the top three teams, excluding , in this tournament. The romped its way to the Gold Medal with a perfect 4-0 record punctuated by a dominating 91-58 win over in the final. The 2017 FIBA Women's Melanesian Basketball Cup was an international basketball tournament contested by nations of the newly formed Melanesia FIBA Oceania sub-zone. The inaugural edition of the women's tournament were held together alongside the Men's tournament in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea from 27 to 30 September 2017.
