Basingstoke And Deane
Basingstoke and Deane is a local government district and borough in Hampshire, England. Its primary settlement is Basingstoke. Other settlements include Bramley, Tadley, Kingsclere, Overton, Oakley, Whitchurch and the village of Deane, some from Basingstoke. It is the northernmost borough of Hampshire, bordered by Berkshire to the north. The first Basingstoke Mayor, George Baynard, was appointed in 1641. The district was formed as the District of Basingstoke on 1 April 1974 by the merger of the borough of Basingstoke, Basingstoke Rural District and Kingsclere and Whitchurch Rural District. On 20 January 1978, following the grant of borough status, the district became the Borough of Basingstoke and Deane. The council claims that the new title included the names of the largest town and smallest village in the borough, although there are eight civil parishes with populations smaller than Deane. The 1998 Basingstoke and Deane Council election took place on 7 May 1998 to elect members of Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council in Hampshire, England. One third of the council was up for election and the council stayed under no overall control. After the election, the composition of the council was *Conservative 25 *Labour 15 * Liberal Democrats 13 *Independent 4 Campaign Before the election the Conservatives had 22 seats, compared to 17 for the Liberal Democrats and 14 for Labour.
