Basil Emmott
Basil Emmott, BSC (5 July 1894 – 23 January 1976) was a prolific English cinematographer with 190 films to his credit, active from the 1920s to the 1960s. Emmott's career started in the silent era and continued through to the mid-1960s. His most prolific decade was the 1930s, when he was involved with almost 120 films, many of which were produced by noted documentary film-maker John Grierson. Emmott worked mainly in the field of quota quickies and B-movies. His output covered the entire spectrum of film genres, from comedy and musicals, through melodrama and thrillers, to crime and horror films. Eastbourne
Eastbourne () is a town and seaside resort in East Sussex, on the south coast of England, east of Brighton and south of London. Eastbourne is immediately east of Beachy Head, the highest chalk sea cliff in Great Britain and part of the larger Eastbourne Downland Estate. The seafront consists largely of Victorian hotels, a pier, theatre, contemporary art gallery and a Napoleonic era fort and military museum. Though Eastbourne is a relatively new town, there is evidence of human occupation in the area from the Stone Age. The town grew as a fashionable tourist resort largely thanks to prominent landowner, William Cavendish, later to become the Duke of Devonshire. ''The Great Game'' is a 1930 British film, one of the earliest feature films to use football (soccer), football as a central theme. The film's plot contains many elements of what would become clichés in the sporting film genre. Dicky Brown is a young, aspiring footballer who plays for a struggling side, the fictional Manningford F.C., a team in the midst of a successful cup run. He manages to charm the daughter of the chairman and thus breaks into the side, and ultimately wins the Cup for his team. The film covers now clichéd conflicts within football which still exist. ''Spanish Eyes'' is a 1930 British musical film directed by G. B. Samuelson and starring Anthony Ireland, Donald Calthrop and Dennis Noble. It had a gypsy theme and was made at Twickenham Studios in West London. The film was made at night, to allow other more important productions to use the studio in the daytime - a common practice at Twickenham during the era. The film became known for the death of Nita Foy, a West End chorus girl who was working on the film, in what became known as "the Film Studio Horror". It was made at Twickenham Studios. Production background The film consists of excerpts from the stage musical of the same name which was devised by Davy Burnaby in 1921. ''The Co-Optimists'' consisted of a troupe of actors and singers and became largely successful by touring seaside resorts throughout England. The show opened in London on 21 June 1921 and closed on 4 August 1927. The film was produced by Gordon Craig Productions and was directed by Laddie Cliff (who also starred in the film) and Edwin Greenwood.
