Basil Campbell
Basil Gerard Campbell (born 2 August 1956) is a former Australian rules football player of indigenous background who played for the St Mary's Football Club in the Northern Territory Football League (NTFL) and South Fremantle Football Club in the West Australian Football League (WAFL) during the mid-late 1970s and early 1980s. Described as an aggressive and all-action type of player who was solidly built, he joined South Fremantle in 1975 where he generally played at centre half forward. Campbell was an instantly recognizable figure on the field wearing his protective helmet worn as a result of a head injury he suffered early in his career. In 1977 Campbell represented Western Australia in the first State of Origin match where he played on a half back flank. The team defeated Victoria by 94 points. South Fremantle Football Club is an Australian rules football club based in Fremantle, Western Australia. The club plays in the Western Australian Football League (WAFL) and the WAFL Women's (WAFLW), commonly going by the nickname the ''Bulldogs''. Since its founding, the club has won 14 WAFL premierships, the most recent of them in 2020. Warren Campbell (born 19 October 1974) is a former Australian rules footballer for North Melbourne in the Australian Football League (AFL), South Fremantle in the West Australian Football League (WAFL) and St Mary's in the Northern Territory Football League (NTFL) . Football career Originally from Darwin, Northern Territory, he played for the St Mary's Football Club in the Northern Territory Football League (NTFL) before moving to Perth to play for South Fremantle Football Club in the West Australian Football League (WAFL) in 1992 and 1993. He was recruited to North Melbourne with the 23rd selection in the 1992 AFL Draft. Campbell remained in WA for the 1993 season and made his debut for North Melbourne against Melbourne in Round 7 of the 1994 AFL season. The Australian Football League (AFL) is the only fully professional competition of Australian rules football. Through the AFL Commission, the AFL also serves as the sport's governing body and is responsible for controlling the laws of the game. Originally known as the Victorian Football League (VFL), it was founded in 1896 as a breakaway competition from the Victorian Football Association (VFA), with its inaugural season commencing the following year. The VFL, aiming to become a national competition, began expanding beyond Victoria to other Australian states in the 1980s, and changed its name to the AFL in 1990. The league currently consists of 18 teams spread over five of Australia's six states (Tasmania being the exception). The North Melbourne Football Club, nicknamed the Kangaroos, is a professional Australian rules football club. The men's team competes in the Australian Football League (AFL), and the women's team in the AFL Women's (AFLW). The Kangaroos also field a reserves men's team in the Victorian Football League (VFL). The 1997 Westar Rules Grand Final was an Australian rules football game contested between the South Fremantle Football Club and the East Fremantle Football Club, on 21 September 1997 at Subiaco Oval, to determine the premier team of the Westar Rules (known previously and since as the West Australian Football League, WAFL) for the 1997 season. South Fremantle won the game by 6 points, 13.7 (85) to 11.13 (79), with David Hynes of South Fremantle winning the Simpson Medal as best on ground. Season summary The season started with the introduction of a ninth team, the Peel Thunder Football Club. They were the first new team admitted to the league for over 60 years. The Swan Districts Football Club, nicknamed the Swans, is an Australian rules football club playing in the West Australian Football League (WAFL) and WAFL Women's (WAFLW). The club is based at Bassendean Oval, in Bassendean, an eastern suburb of Perth, Western Australia. The club was formed in 1932, and joined the then-Western Australian National Football League (WANFL) in 1934, acting as a successor to the Midland Junction Football Club, which had disbanded during World War I, in the Perth Hills region. Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground.
