''Play with Toys'' is the debut album by American alternative hip hop group Basehead. It was voted one of the top 50 albums of 1992 in '' Q'' magazine, and listed as number 43 in ''NME''s top albums of 1992. Music and lyrics The music style of ''Play with Toys'' fuses elements of rock, blues, funk, hip hop, pop, psychedelic and reggae, and was described as an alternative hip hop "cult favorite". ''Faith'' is the third album by the American group Basehead, released in 1996. The release was delayed for two years as Imago Records separated from BMG. It was the group's last album for the label. Production The album was recorded in 1994 at Pachyderm Recording Studio, in Minnesota, with engineering help from Michael Koppelman; Koppelman and DJ Clarence Greenwood also coproduced some of the tracks. The lyrics, written by Michael Ivey, address themes of Christian spirituality and God. Critical reception ''Entertainment Weekly'' deemed the album "avant-Christian funk", writing that Ivey "hasn't curtailed his humor, his drawling sensuality, or his sense of musical adventure." ''Not in Kansas Anymore'' is the second album by the group Basehead, released in 1993 via Imago. Music and lyrics The music style of ''Not in Kansas Anymore'' fuses elements of funk, hip hop, psychedelic, rock, rhythm and blues, and soul. The first half of the album is about racism; the second half deals with dating norms and rituals. Clarence Greenwood (born May 20, 1968), also known by his stage name, Citizen Cope, is an American songwriter, producer and singer. His music is commonly described as a mix of blues, soul, folk, and rock. Citizen Cope's compositions have been recorded by Carlos Santana, Dido, Pharoahe Monch and Richie Havens. He currently records and produces for his own record label, Rainwater Recordings, which he founded in 2010. He had previously been signed to Capitol, Arista, DreamWorks and RCA. Beastie Boys
Beastie Boys were an American rap rock group from New York City, formed in 1978. The group was composed of Mike D, Michael "Mike D" Diamond (vocals, drums), Adam Yauch, Adam "MCA" Yauch (vocals, bass), and Ad-Rock, Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz (vocals, guitar, Programming (music), programming). Imago Records (The Imago Recording Company) was an American independent record label, which was active during the early 1990s. It was started by Terry Ellis after he left his previous record label, Chrysalis Records. In 1990 Ann Munday was hired as Vice President and General Manager in their New York office. Several influential artists released albums through Imago, including Rollins Band, Aimee Mann, Paula Cole and Love Spit Love. Despite building a slate of up and coming alternative rock artists, the company ran into serious financial difficulties when, in December 1994, the company's former financial backer Bertelsmann Music Group pulled funding.
