Bernadette Bascom
Bernadette Bascom (born 1962 in Baltimore) is an American R&B singer. The daughter of Civil Rights activist Rev. Marion C. Bascom, she began her career as a voice over artist for a local DJ on a Baltimore, Maryland radio station. Bascom was the first artist signed to Stevie Wonder's label Black Bull, and she later forged a great recording career in the Northwestern United States, Pacific Northwest. For fifteen years, Bascom sang on the Las Vegas strip, and she was the co-star in the award-winning show Divine Divas. She was also one of the Motown Moments at the Motown Cafe. Bascom recorded for her own labels Penguin and Solidarity Records. "I Don't Want to Lose your Love" (written and produced by Bill Miller) is her trademark song. Ruth Bascom
Ruth Ellen Bascom (; February 4, 1926 – August 26, 2010) was an American politician who served as the first female mayor of Eugene, Oregon, from 1993 until 1996. Early life Bascom was born Ruth Ellen Fenton in Ames, Iowa, the daughter of two university professors. She was raised in Manhattan, Kansas. Career As mayor, Bascom worked to revitalize downtown Eugene, removing a fountain that blocked traffic on Broadway and Willamette streets and creating bicycle and pedestrian paths. The Riverbank Trail System, which extends for twelve miles through the city along the Willamette River, is named for her. Personal life Bascom met her future husband, John U. Bascom, when the two were sixth-graders. The couple moved to Eugene in 1960 and had six children. On August 15, 2010, Bascom was the passenger of a car driven by her husband, John Bascom. Bascom Lamar Lunsford (March 21, 1882 – September 4, 1973) was a folklorist, performer of traditional Appalachian music, and lawyer from western North Carolina. He was often known by the nickname "Minstrel of the Appalachians." Biography Bascom Lamar Lunsford was born at Mars Hill, Madison County, North Carolina in 1882, into the world of traditional Appalachian folk music. At an early age, his father, a teacher, gave him a fiddle, and his mother sang religious songs and traditional ballads. Lunsford also learned banjo and began to perform at weddings and square dances. After qualifying as a teacher at Rutherford College, Lunsford taught at schools in Madison County. In 1913, Lunsford qualified in law at Trinity College, later to become Duke University. He began to travel and collect material at the start of the 20th century, often meeting singers on isolated farms. James Bascom Giles (September 21, 1900 – July 7, 1993) was an American politician who was the Texas Land Commissioner from 1939 to 1955. Implicated in the Veterans' Land Board scandal, he gave up his office and served three years in prison. Early life Giles was born near Manor, Texas, in Travis County on September 21, 1900. He was the son of Banton W. and Leora Norwood Giles. He married Effie Dean Rogan in 1921. They had two sons: J. Bascom Giles, III, and Rogan B. Giles. Career and public service Giles entered the General Land Office in September 1919, as a draftsman. He progressed within the office and in November 1936, he became associated with the State Tax Board as chief abstractor, which position he resigned on April 8, 1938, to run for commissioner of the General Land Office.
