Bas-Uélé Province
Bas-Uélé (French for "Lower Uélé") is one of the 21 new provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo created in the Subdivisions of the DR Congo#New provinces, 2015 repartitioning. Bas-Uélé, Haut-Uélé, Ituri Province, Ituri, and Tshopo provinces are the result of the dismemberment of the former Orientale Province. Bas-Uélé was formed from the Bas-Uele District whose town of Buta, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Buta was elevated to capital city of the new province. Administration Bas-Uélé lies in the north-east of the DRC on the Uélé River (the French name for the province means "Lower Uélé"). The province includes the following territories: *Aketi Territory, Aketi *Ango Territory, Ango *Bambesa Territory, Bambesa *Bondo Territory, Bondo *Buta Territory, Buta *Poko Territory, Poko People Most of the inhabitants of the Bas-Uélé Province, with a population of 900,000 in 2007, are Azandé people. Provinces Of The Democratic Republic Of The Congo
Article 2 of the Constitution of the Democratic Republic of the Congo divides the country into the capital city of Kinshasa and 25 named provinces. It also gives the capital the status of a province. Therefore, in many contexts Kinshasa is regarded as the 26th province. List History When Belgium annexed the Belgian Congo as a colony in November 1908, it was initially organised into 22 districts. Ten western districts were administered directly by the main colonial government, while the eastern part of the colony was administered under two vice-governments: eight northeastern districts formed Orientale Province, and four southeastern districts formed Katanga. In 1919, the colony was organised into four provinces: * Congo-Kasaï (five southwestern districts), * Équateur (five northwestern districts), * Orientale Province and Katanga (previous vice-governments).
