Baruch College (officially the Bernard M. Baruch College) is a public college in New York City. It is a constituent college of the City University of New York system. Named for financier and statesman Bernard M. Baruch, the college operates undergraduate and postgraduate programs through the Zicklin School of Business, the Weissman School of Arts and Sciences, and the Marxe School of Public and International Affairs. History Baruch College is one of the senior colleges in the CUNY system. It traces its roots back to the 1847 founding of the Free Academy, the first institution of free public higher education in the United States. Townsend Harris
Townsend Harris (October 4, 1804 – February 25, 1878) was an American merchant and politician who served as the first United States Consul General to Japan. He negotiated the "Harris Treaty" between the US and Japan and is credited as the diplomat who first opened Shogunate Japan to foreign trade and culture in the Edo period. He was portrayed by John Wayne in the 1958 historical adventure drama film ''The Barbarian and the Geisha.'' In New York Harris was born in the village of Sandy Hill (now Hudson Falls), in Washington County in upstate New York. Mitchel B. Wallerstein is an American educator, philanthropist, policy expert, and former senior official of the federal government of the United States. He is the President Emeritus of Baruch College of the City University of New York and is currently appointed as a University Professor. Edward Van Buren Regan (May 14, 1930 – October 18, 2014) was an American politician and public figure from New York State. He was a member of the Republican Party. Matthew Goldstein (born November 10, 1941) is the former chancellor of the City University of New York (CUNY). Goldstein was appointed CUNY chancellor on September 1, 1999.
