Bartłomiej Groicki
Bartłomiej Groicki (c. 1534–1605) was a Polish jurist. After studies in Cracow (1550–58), he became clerk of the Supreme Court of German Law at Cracow Castle (''Ius supremum Magdeburgense castri Cracoviensis''). He gained renown for his instructive treatises of Polish municipal law. By publishing a Polish language summary of the 1532 ''Constitutio Criminalis Carolina'', he contributed substantially to its popularization in Poland. His stated motivation for the extensive translation of laws into vernacular Polish was so that the laws could be applied even in smaller towns and urban areas where it might be difficult to find Latin speakers. Constitutio Criminalis Carolina
The Constitutio Criminalis Carolina (sometimes shortened to Carolina) is recognised as the first body of German criminal law (''Strafgesetzbuch''). It was also known as the '' Halsgerichtsordnung'' (Procedure for the judgment of capital crimes) of Charles V. Its basis was the ''Halsgerichtsordnung'' of Bamberg (also known as the ''Bambergensis'') drawn up by Johann Freiherr von Schwarzenberg in 1507, which in turn went back to the humanistic school of Roman law. The Carolina was agreed in 1530 at the Diet of Augsburg under Holy Roman Emperor Charles V and ratified two years later at the Diet in Regensburg (1532) (which was judicially a ''Hoftag'', an informal meeting), at which point it became law. It predominantly covered civil law alongside criminal law. Sachsenspiegel
The (; gml, Sassen Speyghel; modern nds, Sassenspegel; all literally "Saxon Mirror") is one of the most important law books and custumals compiled during the Holy Roman Empire. Originating between 1220 and 1235 as a record of existing local traditional customary laws and rulings, it was used in places until as late as 1900. Some legal principles as captured in the book reign into recent time laws throughout Europe. It is important not only for its lasting effect on later German and Dutch law but also as an early example of written prose in a German language. The Sachsenspiegel is the first comprehensive law book not in Latin, but in Middle Low German. A Latin edition is known to have existed, but only fragmented chapters remain. Łazarz Andrysowicz
Łazarz Andrysowicz (died 1577) was a Polish Renaissance printer, founder of the Oficyna Łazarzowa. He published about 270 books, prized for their high quality for the times. Biography Łazarz Andrysowicz was born in Stryków on an unknown date. In 1550 he married Barbara, widow of the Kraków printer Hieronymus Vietor, and thus became the owner of the latter's printing office. Having expanded and updated the printing facilities, Andrysowicz began printing books as the ''Drukarnia Łazarzowa'' (Łazarz Printing House). After Andrysowicz's death, his son, Jan Januszowski took over his printing business. Publishing activities Andrysowicz's printing office published about 270 works, of which about 130 were in Polish.
