''Barthlottia madagascariensis'' is the only species in the genus ''Barthlottia'' of flowering plants in the family Scrophulariaceae. The large shrub with conspicuous purple flowers is native to a very restricted area in southeast Madagascar and was described in 1996. Description Shrubs are up to 3m. The elliptic-lanceolate opposite leaves are up to 15cm long. Terminal inflorescences have up to 15 conspicuous 5-lobed bell shaped flowers, which are up to 4cm long and purplish-red.Fischer, E. Wilhelm Barthlott (born 1946 in Forst, Germany) is a German botanist and biomimetic materials scientist. His official botanical author citation is Barthlott. Barthlott's areas of specialization are biodiversity (Global distribution, assessment, and change in biodiversity) and Bionics/Biomimetics (in particular, superhydrophobic biological surfaces and their technical applications). He is one of the pioneers in the field of biological and technical interfaces. Based on his systematic research on plant surfaces, he developed self-cleaning (lotus effect) technical surfaces and technical surfaces, which permanently retain air under water (Salvinia effect). Scrophulariaceae
The Scrophulariaceae are a family of flowering plants, commonly known as the figwort family. The plants are annual and perennial herbs, as well as shrubs. Flowers have bilateral (zygomorphic) or rarely radial (actinomorphic) symmetry. The Scrophulariaceae have a cosmopolitan distribution, with the majority found in temperate areas, including tropical mountains. Andohahela National Park
Andohahela National Park, in south-east Madagascar, is remarkable for the extremes of habitats that are represented within it. The park covers of the Anosy mountain range, the southernmost spur of the Malagasy Highlands and contains the last humid rainforests in the southern part of Madagascar. The Park was inscribed in the World Heritage Site in 2007 as part of the Rainforests of the Atsinanana. Jean-Henri Humbert
Jean-Henri Humbert (24 January 1887 – 20 October 1967) was a French botanist born in Paris. He studied physics, chemistry and natural sciences in Rennes and Paris, and following a scientific excursion to Madagascar, he worked as a university assistant at the faculty of Clermont-Ferrand (from 1913). In 1919 he was appointed to the chair of botany, subsequently teaching botany classes at the institute of chemistry and industrial technology (1920–22). In 1922 he relocated to Algiers, where he became ''chef de travaux'' to the faculty of sciences. In 1931 he succeeded Henri Lecomte (1856-1934) as chair of botany at the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle in Paris. Nymphaea Thermarum
''Nymphaea thermarum'' is the world's smallest water lily yet described. The pads (leaves) of ''N. thermarum'' can measure only across, less than 10% the width of the next smallest species in the genus ''Nymphaea'' (though they are more usually about or ). By comparison, the largest water lily has pads that can reach . All wild plants were lost due to destruction of its native habitat, but it was saved from extinction when it was grown from seed at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in 2009.
