Bart Maris
Bart Maris is a Belgian trumpet player. He has performed in a very large number of bands, either as a group member or a guest musician on records or in concert. He was one of the original members of Fukkeduk with Niek Roseeuw, Kristof Roseeuw, Tom Dewulf, Jan Kuijken, Rik Verstrepen, Frank Gijsels, and also the Gerard Van Dongen Kwintet with Joe Williamson, Tom Wouters, Henk Bakker. He was in KAMIKAZE, with Tom Wouters, Filip Wauters, Kristof Roseeuw, also in X-Legged Sally with Peter Vermeersch, Pierre Vervloesem, Danny Van Hoeck, Pol Belgrado and Jean-luc Plouvier and later Peter Van Den Berghe. Maris joined Think of One, with Roel Poriau, Erik Morel, Tobe Wouters, Thomas Desmedt, David Bové and the Flat Earth Society (band), Flat Earth Society. Ninove
Ninove () is a city and municipality located in the Flemish province of East Flanders in Belgium. It is situated on the river Dender, and is part of the Denderstreek. The municipality comprises the city of Ninove proper and since the 1976 merger of the towns of , , , , Meerbeke, , , , , and . On 1 January 2018 Ninove had a total population of 38,692. The total area is 72.57 km2 which gives a population density of 533 inhabitants per km2. History The oldest version of the name "Ninove", ''Neonifus'' dates from the 9th century. Leo Records is a British record company and label which releases jazz from Russian, American, and British musicians. It concentrates on free jazz. Leo Records was founded in 1979 by Leo Feigin (also known under his broadcasting name Aleksei Leonidov), a Russian immigrant to Britain. The label was particularly associated with establishing the world reputation of the Ganelin Trio during the 1970s and 1980s. It is generally associated with more experimental releases. The label has a close relationship with the artists who release material on the label; it does not sign artists to contracts, but releases their material on a single-album basis. By 2010 there were over 700 titles in Leo Records catalogue. Leo Records comprises four labels: Leo Records, Leo Lab (Leo Records Laboratory), Golden Years of New Jazz, and FeetFirst records. Wim Vandekeybus
Wim Vandekeybus (Herenthout, 30 June 1963) is a Belgian choreographer, director and photographer. His company Ultima Vez is located in Sint-Jans-Molenbeek (Brussels). Together with Jan Fabre, Alain Platel and Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, Wim Vandekeybus has been responsible for the Flemish Wave in contemporary dance in the 80's. He made over thirty international dance and theater productions and almost as many movies and video works. Breakthrough After graduating high school, he briefly studied Psychology in KU Leuven in Leuven, Belgium. But later on, however, he decided to pursue a different path. Pierre Vervloesem
Pierre Vervloesem is a Belgian avant-garde guitar player and producer, and has been described as Belgium's Frank Zappa. Career After playing in a handful of experimental rock bands in the early 1990s, Vervloesem joined avant-garde band X-Legged Sally. Flat Earth Society (band)
The Flat Earth Society (FES) is a Belgian big band ensemble founded and led by Peter Vermeersch. They mix the rich Belgian brass band (HaFaBra) tradition with characteristic topsy-turvy creativity. Biography Their earliest gig took place in 1997, when they performed a composition by Peter Vermeersch to accompany a circus act by De Circusplaneet during the Oorsmeer festival. They also performed on the song ''Porqué te Vas'' by A Group, Peter Vermeersch' avant-garde pop band. Wider attention came thanks to the Flemish radio station Radio 1, where they performed on the show ''Levende Lijven''. The entire gig was recorded and later released under the title ''Live at the Beursschouwburg 1999'', containing compositions by Peter Vermeersch and covers of jazz numbers. X-Legged Sally
X-Legged Sally (XLS) is a Belgian avant-garde rock/jazz-band founded in 1988 by composer Peter Vermeersch, and disbanded in 1997. They were one of the first bands from Belgium to combine a set of very different musical styles (jazz, rock, improvisation and classical), becoming a starting point for the Belgian indie music scene that developed in the nineties. Biography Initially, X-Legged Sally was formed to compose and perform the music Peter Vermeersch wrote for dance productions, such as ''Immer das Selbe Gelogen'' (Always the Same Lies), released as a live cd in 1991. Vermeersch' composing style was becoming too demanding for the constraints of sheet music such as was used in his earlier band Maximalist!. De Werf
De Werf was an arts center and jazz record label (W.E.R.F.) in Bruges, Belgium. In 2002, the label released an eleven-CD box set titled ''The Finest of Belgian Jazz'', with music by Greetings from Mercury, Aka Moon, Brussels Jazz Orchestra, and Kris Defoort. Rik Bevernage, De Werf's main collaborator, received an award at the 2002 Golden Django ceremony. In 2017, De Werf and Vrijstaat O (Ostend) merged into a new organisation, KAAP. The W.E.R.F. record label continues its activities under the original name. De Werf has its own concert hall where many jazz bands perform. There are also theatre pieces and events for children. In February 2009, public funding for the venue was removed because the club didn't produce relevant or up-to-date concerts and theatre performances, making a closure of De Werf from 31 December 2009 likely. Knitting Factory Records is an independent American music label that is notable for promoting a variety of artists, including the music of deceased Nigerian political activist Fela Kuti.
