Alaska's 1st House Of Representatives District
Alaska's 1st House of Representatives district is the first of 40 districts of the Alaska House of Representatives and was created in statehood in 1959. It is currently represented by Republican Bart LeBon. Following redistricting in 2013, the district is currently composed of downtown Fairbanks and has a population of 17,182. The state legislature underwent redistricting following the 2020 census, which placed the first district in Southeast Alaska, covering the cities of Ketchikan, Wrangell, and Metlakatla. The new district will come into effect upon the start of the 33rd legislature in 2023. Scott Jiu Wo Kawasaki (born March 20, 1975) is an American healthcare professional and politician from Alaska. A Democrat, he is a member of the Alaska Senate representing the state's District A, which includes neighborhoods within the city limits of Fairbanks. Early life and education Scott Kawasaki was born in Tokyo, Japan while his parents Koji and Virginia Kawasaki taught internationally. The family returned to Fairbanks in 1980, where he has lived ever since. Kawasaki attended public schools in Fairbanks before earning a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 2006. Career Kawasaki was elected to the Fairbanks City Council in 1999. At age 24, he was one of the youngest members ever to serve on that body.
