Barry Wakelin
Barry Hugh Wakelin (born 7 May 1946) is an Australian politician, who was a Liberal member of the Australian House of Representatives from March 1993 until November 2007, representing the Division of Grey, South Australia. He was born in Kimba, South Australia, and was a farmer and small businessman before entering politics. In 1993, he stood as the Liberal candidate in Grey, historically one of the few country seats where Labor consistently did well. He became only the fifth non-Labor member ever to win it, and the second in 50 years. While Wakelin's win was and still is considered an upset, the election came at a very bad time for Labor in South Australia. The incumbent state Labor government was still reeling from the collapse of the State Bank of South Australia, and would be heavily defeated at the state election held later in 1993. The Division of Grey is an Australian electoral division in South Australia. The division was one of the seven established when the former Division of South Australia was redistributed on 2 October 1903 and is named for Sir George Grey, who was Governor of South Australia from 1841 to 1845 (and later Prime Minister of New Zealand). Geography Since 1984, federal electoral division boundaries in Australia have been determined at redistributions by a redistribution committee appointed by the Australian Electoral Commission. Redistributions occur for the boundaries of divisions in a particular state, and they occur every seven years, or sooner if a state's representation entitlement changes or when divisions of a state are malapportioned. Rebecca Morse (journalist)
Rebecca Jane Morse (born 26 August 1977, in South Australia) is an Australian journalist, news and radio presenter. Morse was a presenter of Adelaide's '' 10 News First.'' She is also a co-host on SAFM's breakfast radio show ''Bec, Cosi & Lehmo'' in Adelaide with Andrew "Cosi" Costello and Anthony Lehmann. Career Morse attended Blackwood High School and the University of South Australia at Magill. Prior to joining Ten she worked for the ABC in Adelaide as a reporter and presenter. She was a finalist in the Walkley Awards in 2004 in the category of Television News Reporting and in 2005 won the gold award for Journalist of the Year at the South Australian Media Awards. State elections were held in South Australia on 11 December 1993. All 47 seats in the South Australian House of Assembly were up for election. The incumbent Australian Labor Party led by Premier of South Australia Lynn Arnold was defeated by the Liberal Party of Australia led by Leader of the Opposition Dean Brown. The Liberals won what is still the largest majority government in South Australian history. Background The campaign was dominated by the issue of the collapse of the State Bank of South Australia in 1991. Lloyd O'Neil
Lloyd Reginald Terrence O'Neil (born 24 June 1937) is a former Australian politician. He was a member of the House of Representatives from 1983 to 1993, representing the South Australian seat of Grey for the Australian Labor Party (ALP). Early life O'Neil was born on 24 June 1937 in Port Pirie, South Australia. A boilermaker by profession, he became president of the Amalgamated Metal Workers and Shipwrights Union (AMWSU) and was a delegate to the Whyalla Trades and Labour Council. Politics O'Neil was secretary of the ALP's Whyalla branch from 1970 to 1982. He worked as an electoral assistant to Grey MP Laurie Wallis, before succeeding him in federal parliament at the 1983 federal election. The State Bank of South Australia was a bank created in 1896 and owned by the Government of South Australia. The bank became the subject of a two-year South Australian Royal Commission upon collapse in 1991. The surviving part of the bank now exists as BankSA.
