Barry Paterson
Dame Alison Mae Paterson (formerly Dinsdale, née Glennie; born 22 August 1935) is a New Zealand businesswoman. In 1979, she became the first woman to sit on the board of a publicly listed company in New Zealand. Early life and family Paterson was born Alison Mae Glennie at Taumarunui on 22 August 1935. She was educated at New Plymouth Girls' High School, and became deaf towards the end of her schooling, although this was subsequently largely resolved through a series of operations. In about 1956, she married Alan John Dinsdale, but they later divorced. In 1991, she married lawyer Barry John Paterson. He was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1993, and served as a High Court judge between 1996 and 2004. Career After leaving school, Glennie worked as the petty-cash girl for an accountancy firm, and studied accounting by correspondence. Taumarunui
Taumarunui is a small town in the King Country of the central North Island of New Zealand. It is on an alluvial plain set within rugged terrain on the upper reaches of the Whanganui River, 65 km south of Te Kuiti and 55 km west of Turangi. It is under the jurisdiction of Ruapehu District and Manawatū-Whanganui region. Its population is as of making it the largest centre for a considerable distance in any direction. It is on State Highway 4 and the North Island Main Trunk railway. The name ''Taumarunui'' is reported to be the dying words of the Māori chief Pehi Turoa – ''taumaru'' meaning screen and ''nui'' big, literally translated as Big Screen, being built to shelter him from the sun, or more commonly known to mean – "The place of big shelter". There are also references to Taumarunui being known as large sheltered location for growing kumara. Dame Companion Of The New Zealand Order Of Merit
The New Zealand Order of Merit is an order of merit in the New Zealand royal honours system. It was established by royal warrant on 30 May 1996 by Elizabeth II, Queen of New Zealand, "for those persons who in any field of endeavour, have rendered meritorious service to the Crown and nation or who have become distinguished by their eminence, talents, contributions or other merits", to recognise outstanding service to the Crown and people of New Zealand in a civil or military capacity. In the order of precedence, the New Zealand Order of Merit ranks immediately after the Order of New Zealand. New Zealand Women Of Influence Award
The New Zealand Women of Influence Awards are an annual set of awards which recognise women who make a difference to everyday New Zealanders' lives. The Awards were first made in 2013 and were initially sponsored by Westpac Bank. In 2016, Stuff NZ became a joint sponsor. Nominations are invited from the public. A panel selects finalists in each category, who are invited to an awards dinner at the Aotea Centre in Auckland where the recipients are announced. In 2021 the awards dinner was not held due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
