Barry Metcalfe
Barry Stanley Metcalfe (28 September 1935 – 3 April 1980) was an Australian rules footballer who played a game with Hawthorn in the VFL and spent the early 1960s at Claremont. Metcalfe, who was used mainly as a wingman, played his first and only game for Hawthorn in the club's 1957 away game against Carlton at Princes Park. One of four Hawthorn players to debut that day, Metcalfe was on the bench and did not take to the field. When teammate Len Crane was appointed captain-coach of VFA club Mordialloc in 1958, Metcalfe joined him for the season. He represented the Association at the 1958 Melbourne Carnival and he was selected to the All-Australian team. Hawthorn Football Club
The Hawthorn Football Club, nicknamed the Hawks, is a professional Australian rules football club based in Mulgrave, Victoria, that competes in the Australian Football League (AFL). The club was founded in 1902 in the inner-east suburb of Hawthorn, making it the youngest Victorian-based team in the AFL. Hawthorn is the only club to have won premierships in each decade of the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s. In total, it has won 13 senior VFL/AFL premierships. The All-Australian team is an all-star team of Australian rules footballers, selected by a panel at the end of each season. It represents a complete team, including an interchange bench, of the best-performed players during the season, led by that season's premiership coach. Despite its nature, the All-Australian team is only ceremonial. Though the AFL played an All-Star match in 2020, it was the first in 12 years, and the difference in skill level between the All-Australian team and the nearest international competitor is currently too large for any contest to be competitive. 1961 Brisbane Carnival
The 1961 Brisbane Carnival was the 15th edition of the Australian National Football Carnival, an Australian rules football interstate competition. It was the last carnival to be held in Queensland. It was one of the most competitive carnivals to have been played, with the traditional carnival powerhouse Victoria going down to Western Australia in the final game to give Western Australia its first carnival victory since 1921. Despite Victoria comfortably accounting for South Australia, the Western Australians narrowly lost their game to South Australia. Tasmania, who traditionally struggle, lost all games but got within seven points of the South Australians. With Western Australia, South Australia and Victoria all finishing on 2 wins and a loss, Western Australia won the championship due to a superior percentage. 1958 Melbourne Carnival
The 1958 Melbourne Carnival was the 14th edition of the Australian National Football Carnival, an Australian rules football interstate competition. It was the last carnival to be hosted by the state of Victoria and was also known as the Centenary Carnival as it celebrated 100 years since the creation of the sport. For the first time since the 1950 Brisbane Carnival, all nine eligible teams in both Section 1 and Section 2 competed at the carnival. Section 1 consisted of two Victorian teams from the (VFL and VFA), South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania; Section 2 consisted of New South Wales, Canberra, Queensland and the Australian Amateurs. Mordialloc Football Netball Club, nicknamed The Bloodhounds, is an Australian rules football and netball club that currently participates in the Southern Football Netball League. Mordialloc also played in the Victorian Football Association (VFA) from 1958 until 1988. History The club is based in the Melbourne suburb of Mordialloc and started out in the Federal Football Association. Len Crane
Len Crane (7 February 1928 – 24 May 2006) was an Australian rules footballer who played for South Melbourne and Hawthorn in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Crane made his VFL debut in 1947 with South Melbourne and played as a half back flanker. After four seasons with South Melbourne he moved to Hawthorn for the 1951 VFL season where he was used at full back and went on to represent Victoria in interstate football in 1953 and 1954. In 1954 Crane finished equal fourth in the Brownlow Medal count. From 1958 to 1961, Porta coached Mordialloc in the Victorian Football Association. Princes Park (or Carlton Recreation Ground, currently known by its sponsored name Ikon Park) is an Australian rules football ground located inside the wider Princes Park in the inner Melbourne suburb of Carlton North. It is a historic venue, having been the home ground of the Carlton Football Club since early in its history. Prior to a partial redevelopment the ground had a nominal capacity of 35,000, making it the third largest Australian rules football venue in Melbourne after the Melbourne Cricket Ground and Docklands Stadium.
