Panton Hill, Victoria
Panton Hill is a town in Victoria, Australia, 32 km north-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the Shire of Nillumbik local government area. Panton Hill recorded a population of 1,063 at the 2021 census. History Originally called Kingstown, the area experienced population growth in the mid-1850s during the Victorian gold rush when prospectors mined the hills around the town known as the Caledonia Goldfields. It was named after Joseph Anderson Panton, who was the magistrate at Heidelberg and spent much of his spare time mapping the Yarra Valley. Panton Hill Post Office opened on 1 October 1875. Hugh Gilchrist (8 August 191616 October 2010) was an Australian public servant, diplomat and author. Background and early career Born in Sydney on 8 August 1916, Gilchrist was educated at Cranbrook School and the University of Sydney. Following military service during World War II, he joined the Department of External Affairs in October 1945 as second secretary in the political intelligence section. Career Whilst Australian Ambassador to Greece between 1968 and 1972, Gilchrist developed a fascination with Greek-Australian history. The Ambassador of Australia to Turkey is an officer of the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the head of the Embassy of the Commonwealth of Australia to the Republic of Turkey. The ambassador resides in Ankara. Since 2011, non-resident accreditation has been held for Azerbaijan and Georgia, which were transferred from the Embassy in Moscow.
