Barry Fraser
Barry Fraser (February 10, 1940 – December 4, 2022) was a Canadian ice hockey executive who was the Director of Scouting for the Edmonton Oilers of the National Hockey League from 1979 to 2000. Career Born in Kirkland Lake, Ontario, Fraser attempted a professional hockey career as a player, but his career was cut short, due to knee injuries. He decided to pursue his dreams of being in the National Hockey League as a scout. Fraser was credited with building the foundation which led to the Oilers' dynasty of 1983–1990. He was present when drafting big name players, such as Grant Fuhr, Kevin Lowe, Mark Messier, Glenn Anderson, Paul Coffey, and many more, as well as when the Oilers purchased Wayne Gretzky from the Indianapolis Racers. In 1983, the Edmonton Oilers went to the Stanley Cup for the first time. They did not win, but proved Fraser a legitimate drafting scout. Kirkland Lake
Kirkland Lake is a town and municipality in Timiskaming District in Northeastern Ontario, Canada. The 2016 population, according to Statistics Canada, was 7,981. The community name was based on a nearby lake which in turn was named after Winnifred Kirkland, a secretary of the Ontario Department of Mines in Toronto. The lake was named by surveyor Louis Rorke in 1907. Miss Kirkland never visited the town, and the lake that bore her name no longer exists because of mine tailings. The community comprises Kirkland Lake (Teck Township), as well as Swastika, Chaput Hughes, Bernhardt, and Morrisette Twp. Kirkland Lake was built on gold, but it is equally well known for producing world-famous hockey players. Indeed, legendary hockey broadcaster Foster Hewitt called Kirkland Lake "the town that made the NHL." Wayne Gretzky
Wayne Douglas Gretzky ( ; born January 26, 1961) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player and former head coach. He played 20 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) for four teams from 1979 to 1999. Nicknamed "the Great One", he has been called the greatest hockey player ever by many sportswriters, players, '' The Hockey News'', and by the NHL itself, based on extensive surveys of hockey writers, ex-players, general managers and coaches. Gretzky is the leading goal scorer, assist producer and point scorer in NHL history, and has more assists in his career than any other player scored total points. Indianapolis Racers
The Indianapolis Racers were a major league hockey team in the World Hockey Association (WHA) from 1974 to 1978. They competed in four full seasons before folding 25 games into the 1978–79 season. They played at Market Square Arena. They are often best known for being the first professional team to secure the services of Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier. The Racers were known in the WHA for their sometimes-fanatical fans. The franchise led the WHA in attendance for the 1976-77 season.
