Baron Stalbridge
Baron Stalbridge, of Stalbridge in the County of Dorset, was a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created on 22 March 1886 for the politician and businessman Lord Richard Grosvenor. He was the third son of Richard Grosvenor, 2nd Marquess of Westminster (see Duke of Westminster for earlier history of the family). On the death of Lord Stalbridge's eldest son, the second Baron, on 24 December 1949, the barony became extinct. Stalbridge () is a small town and Civil parishes in England, civil parish in Dorset, England, situated in the Blackmore Vale, near the border with Somerset. In the United Kingdom 2011 Census, 2011 census the civil parish—which includes the hamlets of Stalbridge Weston, and Thornhill—had 1,160 households and a population of 2,698. The nearest towns are Sturminster Newton, southeast, Sherborne, west, and Shaftesbury, northeast. Stalbridge is situated on the A357 road (Great Britain), A357 on a low limestone ridge, west of the River Stour, Dorset, River Stour. It officially became a town in April 1992. Richard Grosvenor, 1st Baron Stalbridge
Richard de Aquila Grosvenor, 1st Baron Stalbridge, (28 January 1837 – 18 May 1912), styled Lord Richard Grosvenor between 1845 and 1886, was a British politician and businessman. Initially a Liberal, he served under William Ewart Gladstone as Vice-Chamberlain of the Household between 1872 and 1874 and as Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasury between 1880 and 1885. However, he broke with Gladstone over Irish Home Rule in 1886 and joined the Liberal Unionists. Background and education Grosvenor was the fourth but second surviving son of Richard Grosvenor, 2nd Marquess of Westminster, and Lady Elizabeth Mary, daughter of George Leveson-Gower, 1st Duke of Sutherland. Duke of Westminster is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created by Queen Victoria in 1874 and bestowed upon Hugh Grosvenor, 3rd Marquess of Westminster. It is the most recent dukedom conferred on someone not related to the British royal family. The 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th Dukes were each grandsons of the first. In 1999, it became a subsidiary title of the earldom of Wilton after the 6th Baron Ebury inherited the earldom from his distant cousin, the 7th Earl of Wilton. History The peerage was created in September 1857 for the Whig politician Lord Robert Grosvenor. He was the third son of Robert Grosvenor, 1st Marquess of Westminster, and his wife Lady Eleanor Egerton, daughter of Thomas Egerton, 1st Earl of Wilton.
