Baron Denman
Baron Denman, of Dovedale in the County of Derby, is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created in 1834 for the prominent lawyer, judge and Whig politician Thomas Denman. He served as Lord Chief Justice of the King's Bench from 1832 to 1850. His son, the second Baron, assumed in 1876 by royal licence the additional surname of Aitchison, which was that of his father-in-law. He was succeeded by his grandnephew, the third Baron. He was the grandson of the Hon. Richard Denman, younger son of the first Baron. Lord Denman notably served as Governor-General of Australia from 1911 to 1914. He was succeeded by his eldest son, the fourth Baron. On his death in 1971, the title passed to his first cousin, Sir Charles Denman, 2nd Baronet, of Staffield (see below), who became the fifth holder of the title. Dovedale
Dovedale is a valley in the Peak District of England. The land is owned by the National Trust and attracts a million visitors annually. The valley was cut by the River Dove, Central England, River Dove and runs for just over between Milldale in the north and a wooded ravine, near Thorpe Cloud and Bunster Hill, in the south. In the wooded ravine, a set of stepping stones cross the river and there are two caves known as the ''Dove Holes''. Dovedale's other attractions include rock pillars such as ''Ilam Rock'', ''Viator's Bridge'' and the limestone features ''Lovers' Leap'' and ''Reynard's Cave''. 1929 United Kingdom General Election
The 1929 United Kingdom general election was held on Thursday, 30 May 1929 and resulted in a hung parliament. It stands as the fourth of six instances under the secret ballot, and the first of three under universal suffrage, in which a party has lost on the popular vote but won the highest number (known as "a plurality") of seats versus all other parties (the others are 1874, January 1910, December 1910, 1951 and February 1974). In 1929, Ramsay MacDonald's Labour Party won the most seats in the House of Commons for the first time. The Liberal Party led again by former Prime Minister David Lloyd George regained some ground lost in the 1924 general election and held the balance of power. Parliament was dissolved on 10 May. Joseph Denman
Vice Admiral Joseph Denman (23 June 1810 – 26 November 1874) was a British naval officer, most noted for his actions against the slave trade as a commander of HMS ''Wanderer'' of the West Africa Squadron. Early life Denman was born on 23 June 1810, the son of Thomas Denman, 1st Baron Denman, Lord Chief Justice and a noted abolitionist. Military career Joseph entered the Royal Navy on 7 April 1823, and was promoted to Lieutenant in 1831 and commander in 1835. In 1834, Lieutenant Joseph Denman commanded a prize crew aboard the captured slave ship ''Maria da Gloria''. He first sailed her to the Anglo-Brazilian Mixed Commission Court at Rio de Janeiro, which declined jurisdiction on the grounds that the ship was Portuguese, not Brazilian. Denman then had to sail back across the Atlantic to the Anglo-Portuguese court in Sierra Leone. Sir Richard Douglas Denman, 1st Baronet (24 August 1876 – 22 December 1957), was a radical British Liberal Party politician and Labour Party then National Labour MP. Background Denman was the son of Richard Denman, a court clerk and Helen Mary McMicking. Thomas Denman, 1st Baron Denman, Lord Chief Justice of the King's Bench, was his great-grandfather. Military Cross
The Military Cross (MC) is the third-level (second-level pre-1993) military decoration awarded to officers and (since 1993) other ranks of the British Armed Forces, and formerly awarded to officers of other Commonwealth countries. The MC is granted in recognition of "an act or acts of exemplary gallantry during active operations against the enemy on land" to all members of the British Armed Forces of any rank. The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service. It was established on 4 June 1917 by King George V and comprises five classes across both civil and military divisions, the most senior two of which make the recipient either a knight if male or dame if female. Charles Spencer Denman, 5th Baron Denman, (7 July 1916 – 21 November 2012), was a British businessman. His interest in the Middle East, formed during the Second World War, was the focus for most of his business endeavours. Early life Denman was born on 7 July 1916 in Penrith, Cumbria, Penrith, Cumberland. He was the eldest son of Richard Denman, Sir Richard Douglas Denman, 1st Baronet, who sat as Liberal Party (UK), Liberal Member of Parliament for Carlisle and then as Labour MP for Leeds. He was educated at Shrewsbury School. He left school at 16 with no qualifications. Following school, he began working as a gardener in Luton Hoo and then in St Mawes, Cornwall. Thomas Denman, 3rd Baron Denman
Thomas Denman, 3rd Baron Denman, (16 November 1874 – 24 June 1954), was a British aristocrat and politician who served as the fifth Governor-General of Australia, in office from 1911 to 1914. Denman was born into the English nobility, inheriting his title at the age of 19 from a great-uncle. He attended the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, and served in the Second Boer War. Denman sat with the Liberal Party in the House of Lords, and was made a Lord-in-waiting in 1905 and Chief Whip in 1907. He was appointed to the governor-generalship at the age of 36, and remains the youngest person to have held the position. Denman and his young family were immensely popular with the general public, and he enjoyed friendly relations with Prime Minister Andrew Fisher, with whom he shared many similar political opinions. Thomas Aitchison-Denman, 2nd Baron Denman
Thomas Aitchison-Denman, 2nd Baron Denman (30 July 1805 – 9 August 1894), was a British aristocrat and politician. He was born in London, the son of Thomas Denman and the former Theodosia Anne Vevers. His father was made Attorney General in 1830, and in 1834 became Lord Chief Justice and was raised to the peerage as Baron Denman. His grandfather was the obstetrician Dr Thomas Denman, and his brothers George and Joseph were a High Court judge and admiral, respectively. Denman attended Eton College and Brasenose College, Oxford. He was called to the bar in 1833, as a member of Lincoln's Inn, and thereafter worked as an associate to his father. Denman succeeded to the barony in 1854, and sat regularly in the House of Lords for the rest of his life. However, he "won notoriety rather from his eccentricities than any eminent qualifications".
