Baron Bingley
Baron Bingley is a title that has been created three times, twice in the Peerage of Great Britain and once in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. History The first creation came in 1713 in the Peerage of Great Britain, when the former Chancellor of the Exchequer, Robert Benson, was made Baron Bingley, of Bingley in the County of York. He had no sons and the title became extinct on his death in 1731. However, the title was revived in 1762 for his son-in-law, George Fox-Lane, who was also created Baron Bingley, of Bingley in the County of York, with remainder only to his heirs male with his wife, Harriet (daughter of the first Baron of the 1713 creation). Born George Fox, he was the son of Henry Fox and Frances, daughter of George Lane, 1st Viscount Lanesborough (see Viscount Lanesborough), and assumed in 1751 by Act of Parliament the additional surname of Lane. George Lane-Fox, 1st Baron Bingley
George Richard Lane Fox, 1st Baron Bingley, PC (15 December 1870 – 11 December 1947) was a British Conservative politician. He served as Secretary for Mines between 1922 and 1924, and again between 1924 and 1928. Background and education Lane Fox was born in London, the son of Captain James Thomas Richard Lane Fox, of Hope Hall and Bramham Park, Yorkshire, and Lucy Frances Jane, daughter of Humphrey St John-Mildmay. He was the great-grandson of George Lane-Fox. He was educated at Eton and at New College, Oxford, and was called to the Bar, Inner Temple, in 1895. Career Lane Fox was a militia officer in the 3rd (Militia) Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment when in April 1902 he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Yeomanry regiment the Yorkshire Hussars. Barkston Ash (UK Parliament Constituency)
Barkston Ash was a parliamentary constituency centred on the village of Barkston Ash in the West Riding of Yorkshire (now part of West Yorkshire and North Yorkshire). It was represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom from 1885 until 1983. It elected one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system of election. History The constituency was created under the Redistribution of Seats Act 1885, and in the main returned Conservative MPs at every general election until its abolition. However, it was briefly represented by the Liberal Joseph Andrews, who won the seat at a by-election in October 1905 after the death of its first MP, Sir Robert Gunter. James Fox-Lane
James Fox-Lane (August 1756 – 7 April 1821), known as James Fox until 1773, was an English landed gentleman, who represented Horsham in Parliament for six years. He was the oldest son of Sackville Fox of East Horsley, Surrey, and his wife Ann Holloway. His father died in 1760 and left him his estate in Surrey, worth about £1,300 per year. Educated at Marylebone School, he was admitted to Christ's College, Cambridge in 1771 and studied there until 1774. On 22 February 1773, he inherited the Bramham Park, Yorkshire estate of his paternal uncle George Fox-Lane, 1st Baron Bingley, and subsequently took the name of Fox-Lane. Through extravagance as a youth he became indebted to the moneylender Robert Mackreth. Mackreth bought Fox-Lane's Surrey estate very shortly after James came of age in 1777 and resold it for a handsome profit.
