Baron Allerton
Baron Allerton, of Chapel Allerton in the West Riding of the County of Yorkshire, was a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created on 17 July 1902 for the businessman and Conservative politician William Jackson. The title became extinct on the death of his grandson, the third Baron, on 1 July 1991. The Peerage of the United Kingdom is one of the five Peerages in the United Kingdom. It comprises most peerages created in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland after the Acts of Union 1800, Acts of Union in 1801, when it replaced the Peerage of Great Britain. New peers continued to be created in the Peerage of Ireland until 1898 (the last creation was the Viscount Scarsdale, Barony of Curzon of Kedleston). The House of Lords Act 1999 reformed the House of Lords. Until then, all peers of the United Kingdom were automatically members of the House of Lords. William Jackson, 1st Baron Allerton
William Lawies Jackson, 1st Baron Allerton, (16 February 1840 – 4 April 1917) was a British businessman and Conservative politician. Background and education Born in Otley, near Leeds, England, Jackson was the son of William Jackson, a leather merchant and tanner. He was educated at the Moravian School. Business career Jackson took over his father's business. His ''Times'' obituary reads, "Early in his commercial career he devoted his energies to tanning, and was prominent in the leather industry." He was also Chairman of the Great Northern Railway. Political career Jackson was elected to Leeds Borough Council in 1859. He entered national politics when he unsuccessfully contested Leeds in an 1876 by-election. He was successful in being elected for the same constituency in 1880. He switched to the Northern Division of Leeds in 1885, and he would represent that constituency until he was raised to the peerage in 1902. A coronet is a small crown consisting of ornaments fixed on a metal ring. A coronet differs from other kinds of crowns in that a coronet never has arches, and from a tiara in that a coronet completely encircles the head, while a tiara does not.
