Barney Bernard
Barney Bernard (1877–1924) was an American stage and screen actor. Bernard always looked older than he was which allowed him to play aging ethnic Jewish characters. He established an onstage partnership with Alexander Carr (actor), Alexander Carr and the two starred in the successful play ''Potash and Perlmutter (play), Potash and Perlmutter'' beginning in 1913. Prior to the 'Potash' success, Bernard was in the first Ziegfeld Follie revue, ''Ziegfeld Follies of 1908'' and had also appeared in a few stage musicals with Al Jolson, ''La Belle Paree'' (1911) with Kitty Gordon, ''Vera Violetta'' (1911) with Gaby Deslys, ''The Whirl of Society'' (1912) with Jose Collins. Jose Collins
Charlotte Josephine Collins (23 May 1887 – 6 December 1958) was an English actress and singer known by her stage name, José Collins, who was celebrated for her performances in musical comedies, such as the long-running ''The Maid of the Mountains'', and early motion pictures. Life and career Charlotte Josephine Collins was born in London 1887 to music hall performer and comedian Lottie Collins, who popularized the song "Ta-ra-ra Boom-de-ay!". Her mother later married her music coach, Stephen Patrick Cooney, and Collins took the name Charlotte Josephine Cooney. Collins got her start as a child performer, and by the age of 17 she had appeared in both pantomime and music hall as a singer and actress. Gallagher And Shean
Gallagher & Shean was a highly successful musical comedy double act in vaudeville and on Broadway in the 1910s and 1920s, consisting of Ed Gallagher (1873–1929) and Al Shean (1868–1949); Shean was the maternal uncle of the Marx Brothers. Career Both comedians were relatively obscure vaudeville performers until they teamed up in 1910. Gallagher and Shean first joined forces during the tour of ''The Rose Maid'' in 1912, but they quarreled and split up two years later, in 1914. They next appeared together in 1920, to star in the Shubert Brothers' production of the highly successful ''Cinderella on Broadway'', through the efforts of Shean's sister, Minnie Marx (mother of the Marx Brothers). George Sidney (born Sammy Greenfield; 18 March 1876 – 29 April 1945) was a Hungarian-born American comedian and film actor. He starred in The Cohens and Kellys film series.Kear & King p.203 Early years Born in Nagynichal, Hungary, Sidney was the son of Lewis K. Sidney, an executive at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. He was the uncle of the film director George Sidney. Career In his youth, Sidney performed on amateur night programs at Miner's Bowery Theatre in New York City. His professional debut came at the Harlem Museum, and he went on to perform in burlesque. In his film debut he portrayed Potash in ''In Hollywood with Potash and Perlmutter''. Death On April 29, 1945, Sidney died at his home in Los Angeles, California, aged 68. He was buried in Beth Olam Cemetery of Hollywood. A sequel of sorts, the Jewish ethnic comedy characters of Potash and Perlmutter return from their 1923 debut film, also produced by Goldwyn, but with a different actor for Potash. The films were based on ''Potash and Perlmutter'' a play by Charles Klein and Montague Glass which opened on Broadway in 1913 and ran for 441 performances. This sequel also adapted the play ''Business Before Pleasure'' by Montague Glass and Jules Eckert Goodman which opened in 1917 for 357 performances. ''Potash and Perlmutter'' is a 1923 American silent comedy film directed by Clarence G. Badger. The film is based on an ethnic Jewish comedy with characters created by Montague Glass and Charles Klein for a 1913 Broadway play of the same name which ran for 441 performances. The play is based on the 1909 book of the same name by Montague Glass. This film is notable as the first release of Samuel Goldwyn's independent production company. Stage stars Alexander Carr and Barney Bernard reprise their famous roles from the play in this film. ''The Whirl of Society'' was a satirical Broadway musical that played at the Winter Garden Theatre from March 5 to June 29, 1912. Louis Hirsch composed the music with lyrics by Harold Atteridge, to a book by Harrison Rhodes. The production also featured songs by Arthur Fields. ''The Whirl of Society'' was part of a production also featuring '' Sesostra'' and '' A Night with the Pierrots'', for 136 productions. The musical is set in New York City and takes place in the drawing room and ball room of Mrs. Dean (portrayed by Stella Mayhew in the original production). The production also toured the country. It was performed with ''A Night with the Pierrots'' in Washington DC in November 1912. Fanny Brice was in the musical in 1912, when it was listed as a Shubert production.
