Barnet Urban District
Barnet was a local government district in south Hertfordshire from 1863 to 1965 around the town of Barnet. Creation Barnet Local Government District was created on 25 September 1863, after the town's ratepayers decided to adopt the Local Government Act 1858, and it was governed by a local board. Under the Public Health Act 1872 local government districts were also designated as urban sanitary districts. The Local Government Act 1894 reconstituted the area as an urban district with effect from 31 December 1894, and the local board was replaced by an elected Barnet Urban District Council. Barnet Fair
Barnet Fair is an annual horse and pleasure fair held near Mays Lane, Barnet, England, on the first Monday in September. The Fair takes place over three days starting on 4 September. It still operates under its royal Charter which is issued by Barnet council. The focus in the present-day Fair is no longer on horses and other livestock; but it is rather a pleasure fair instead. History The fair began in 1588 when Queen Elizabeth I granted a charter to the Lord of the Manor of Barnet to hold a fair twice yearly, in addition to the weekly Barnet Market. Originally held in June and October, Lord John Tomlinson changed the dates to April and September in 1758 for the reason of improving business. From 1881, the April fair ceased. The focus of the fair was its livestock, with animals being brought from across the United Kingdom. The Battle of Barnet was a decisive engagement in the Wars of the Roses, a dynastic conflict of 15th-century England. The military action, along with the subsequent Battle of Tewkesbury, secured the throne for Edward IV. Barnet is the primary village and a census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Barnet, Caledonia County, Vermont, United States. As of the 2020 census, the CDP had a population of 127, out of 1,663 in the entire town of Barnet. The village is in southeastern Caledonia County, along the southeast edge of the town of Barnet, sitting on the west bank of the Connecticut River. Barnet contains the locations of Barnet Center, East Barnet, McIndoe Falls, Mosquitoville, Passumpsic and West Barnet. The main settlement of Barnet is recorded as a census-designated place by the U.S. Census Bureau, with a population of 127 at the 2020 census. History The town of Barnet, Vermont, originally took its name from the town of Barnet, England. On September 16, 1763, the town received its charter from the royal governor of New Hampshire, Benning Wentworth. The first European descendants to work the land and stay in the town were three brothers, Daniel, Jacob, and Elijah Hall, along with Jonathan Fowler. Their homestead was built along the Connecticut River and to the north near McIndoe Falls. Elijah Hall built the first house in Caledonia County in Barnet, near the base of Stevens Falls. Elstree Rural District (until 1941 called Barnet Rural District) was a rural district in Hertfordshire, England from 1894 to 1974. Creation The district had its origins in the Barnet Rural Sanitary District, which had been created in 1872, covering the rural parts of the Barnet Poor Law Union. Under the Local Government Act 1894, rural sanitary districts became rural districts on 28 December 1894. Where districts straddled county boundaries, as Barnet Rural Sanitary District did, separate rural districts were to be created for the parts in each county.
