Barnaby Rudge (film)
''Barnaby Rudge'' is a 1915 British silent drama film directed by Thomas Bentley and Cecil M. Hepworth and starring Tom Powers, Stewart Rome and Violet Hopson. It was an adaptation of the 1841 novel ''Barnaby Rudge'' by Charles Dickens which was set amidst the 1780 Gordon Riots in London. The film was made at Walton Studios by Hepworth Pictures, where Bentley had directed several ambitious Dickens adaptations. The production was considered a lavish spectacle by critics, particularly the restaging on the climatic riots, which involved over 1,500 extras.Low p.54 The sets were designed by the art director Warwick Buckland. The film is now considered lost, although a handful of production stills have survived. Thomas Bentley
Thomas Bentley (23 February 1884 – 23 December 1966) was a British film director. He directed 68 films between 1912 and 1941. He directed three films in the early DeForest Phonofilm sound-on-film process, ''The Man in the Street'' (1926), ''The Antidote'' (1927), and ''Acci-Dental Treatment'' (1928). Bentley was born in St George Hanover Square, London and originally trained as an engineer but went on to become a vaudeville performer well known for impersonating the characters from the novels of Charles Dickens on stage, touring Britain and Australia.McFarlane, Brian (28 February 2014). Lord George Gordon
Lord George Gordon (26 December 1751 – 1 November 1793) was a British politician best known for lending his name to the Gordon Riots of 1780. An eccentric and flighty personality, he was born into the Scottish nobility and sat in the House of Commons from 1774 to 1780. His life ended after a number of controversies, notably one surrounding his conversion to Judaism, for which he was ostracised.
