The Barmera-Monash Football Club is an Australian rules football club which competes in the Riverland Football League. The club was formed in 1957 following a merger between the Monash and Barmera clubs who both played in Upper Murray Football League. The Riverland Football League is an Australian rules football league located in South Australia's Riverland region. The league has two divisions - the first division is for the main towns of the Riverland and the second division, called the Riverland Independent Football League, is for the minor towns. Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. Points are scored by kicking the oval ball between the central goal posts (worth six points), or between a central and outer post (worth one point, otherwise known as a "behind"). Monash, South Australia
Monash is a town in the Riverland area of South Australia. It is on the Sturt Highway between Barmera and Renmark. At the 2006 census, Monash had a population of 1,115. Monash was proclaimed in 1921 and is named after General Sir John Monash, a World War I army commander. The primary industry is irrigated horticulture and viticulture. Monash is in the Berri Barmera Council, state electoral district of Chaffey, and federal Division of Barker. Its postcode is 5342. Settlement Land at Monash was allocated to repatriated soldiers returned from World War I as part of the State Government Soldier Settler Scheme. The southern part of the settlement was occupied first and was originally known as Lone Gum after a prominent local landmark, a River Red Gum tree ( Eucalyptus camaldulensis). Barmera, South Australia
Barmera is a town in the Riverland region of South Australia. It is on the Sturt Highway A20, 220 kilometres north-east of Adelaide, the capital of the state of South Australia. It is primarily an agricultural and viticultural town and is located on Lake Bonney Riverland, a freshwater lake. The population was 1,914 in 2011. History The original inhabitants were the Barmerara Meru clan of the Ngawadj people. It is not known where the name "Barmera" comes from but it is suspected that it means "water place" or "land dwellers", being a word from the local Aboriginal group. Others postulate it comes from Barmeedjie, the name of the tribe that lived to the north of the Murray River prior to European settlement. Upper Murray Football League
The Upper Murray Football Netball League ''(UMFNL)'' is an Australian Rules Football and Netball competition based in the rural town of Corryong, Victoria, Australia. The league contains five clubs from around the townships & farming districts of the greater Upper Murray area, including the three founding clubs from 1893. The league features three grades in the Australian rules football competition, with these being Senior-Grade, Under 14's, with Under 10's as Auskick. In the netball competition, there are six grades, with these being A-Grade, B-Grade, C-Grade, D-Grade, Under 15's, with Under 11's as Netta. Results from Auskick & Netta are normally not recorded and final series are normally not played, instead, emphasis is put on having fun while playing sport and improving their skills.
