Barmani Choge

Life Hajiya Sa'adatu Ahmad was born in 1945 in the village of Gwaigwayi, in Katsina State in northern Nigeria. Born into a household of Islamic scholars, she received Islamic education from her father. She also took part in ''dandali'', open-air playing and singing with other children. At the age of fifteen she married Alhaji Aliya, a local young businessman, with whom she had twelve children. Her husband had himself sung and played the ''garaya'' lute with his father, and encouraged her singing. In 1973 she started performing at marriage and naming ceremonies. Katsina State
Katsina State ''(Hausa: Jihar Katsina) (Fula: Leydi Katsina 𞤤𞤫𞤴𞤣𞤭 𞤳𞤢𞥁𞤭𞤲𞤢)'' is a state in the northwestern geopolitical zone of Nigeria. Funtua is a Local Government Area in Katsina State, Nigeria. Its headquarter is in the town of Funtua on the A126 highway. It is one of the premier Local Governments in Nigeria created after the Local Governments reforms in 1976. Hausa Music
The Hausa are one of the largest ethnic groups in Nigeria, Niger, Ghana, Sudan, Cameroon and in many West and Central African countries. Their folk music has played an important part in the development of Nigerian music, contributing such elements as the Goje, a one-stringed fiddle. There are two broad categories of traditional Hausa music: rural folk music and urban court music. They introduced the African pop culture genre that is still popular today. Ceremonial music (''rokon fada'') is performed as a status symbol, and musicians are generally chosen for political reasons as opposed to musical ones. Garaya (lute)
The garaya or komo is an oval-bodied, two-string spike lute from Niger and Northern Nigeria. Details Two different versions of the ''garaya'' exist in Nigeria. The Fulani people and Hausa people both have their own version. Hausa ''garaya'' A garaya is around 50 centimeters long, plucked with a plectrum made from stiffened cowhide or hippopotamus hide. It is used by the Hausa people to play traditional music. The instrument has a wooden soundbox in the shape of an oval, covered with goatskin or duiker-skin and a neck that goes through both sides of the bowl. From the butt, the strings run across the bowl, and the loose ends are tied to tuning strings (which are wrapped around the neck as anchor points).
