Barlowe's Guide To Extraterrestrials
''Barlowe's Guide to Extraterrestrials'' (1979; second edition 1987) is a science fiction book by artist Wayne Barlowe, with Ian Summers and Beth Meacham (who provided the text). It contains Barlowe's visualizations of different extraterrestrial life forms from various works of science fiction, with information on their planetary location or range, biology, and behaviors, in the style of a real field guide for animals. It was nominated for an American Book Award and for the 1980 Hugo Award for Best Related Work. The second edition has an added foreword by Robert Silverberg. After the success of the work, in 1996 Barlowe and Neil Duskis wrote a second book, ''Barlowe's Guide to Fantasy''. Wayne Barlowe
Wayne Douglas Barlowe is an American science fiction and fantasy writer, painter, and concept artist. Barlowe's work focuses on esoteric landscapes and creatures such as citizens of hell and alien worlds. He has painted over 300 book and magazine covers and illustrations for many major book publishers, as well as ''Life'' magazine, ''Time'' magazine, and ''Newsweek''. His 1979 book '' Barlowe’s Guide to Extraterrestrials'' was nominated in 1980 for the Hugo Award for Best Related Non-Fiction Book, the first year that award category was awarded. It also won the 1980 Locus Award for Best Art or Illustrated Book. His 1991 speculative evolution book ''Expedition'' was nominated for the 1991 Chesley Award for Artistic Achievement. ''Masters of the Maze'' is a science fiction novel by American writer Avram Davidson, originally published in 1965 by Pyramid Books with a cover by John Schoenherr. The first UK edition, the only hardcover to date, was issued by White Lion in 1974. An American paperback reprint followed from Manor Books in 1976. Ebook editions appeared in 2012, from both Prologue Books and SF Gateway. The novel presents historical and fictional characters as "Guardians" of a maze which malignant, insect-like aliens are seeking to traverse in order to subjugate Earth. ''Planet of Adventure'' is a series of four science fiction novels by Jack Vance, published between 1968 and 1970. The novels relate the adventures of the scout Adam Reith, the sole survivor of an Earth ship investigating a signal from the distant planet ''Tschai''. Setting Tschai is a planet orbiting the star Carina 4269, 212 light-years from Earth. It is populated by various sentient alien species. The native Pnume have been subjected to invasions by three species. In addition, there are humans, captured and brought to the planet long ago by one of the spacefaring species; some of them live as slaves or servants of each of the alien races, while others have managed to create their own societies. Jack Vance
John Holbrook Vance (August 28, 1916 – May 26, 2013) was an American mystery, fantasy, and science fiction writer. Though most of his work has been published under the name Jack Vance, he also wrote several mystery novels under pen names. Vance won the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement in 1984, and he was a Guest of Honor at the 1992 World Science Fiction Convention in Orlando, Florida. The Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America made him its 15th SFWA Grand Master, Grand Master in 1997, and the EMP Museum#Science Fiction Hall of Fame, Science Fiction Hall of Fame inducted him in 2001, its sixth class of two deceased and two living writers. David John Lake (26 March 1929 – 31 January 2016) was an Indian-born Australian science fiction writer, poet, and literary critic. He wrote as David Lake and David J. Lake. Life Born in Bangalore, India 26 March 1929, India, Lake received a List of alumni of Jesuit educational institutions, Jesuit education at St. Xavier's School in Calcutta (1940–44). He was originally a citizen of the United Kingdom, where he studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, receiving his Bachelor of Arts in 1952, and his Master of Arts (Oxford, Cambridge and Dublin), Master of Arts in 1956. He went on to study at University College of North Wales, where he was awarded a diploma in linguistics in 1965, and studied at the University of Queensland (PhD, 1974). Well World
The Well World series is a series of science fiction novels by Jack L. Chalker. It involves a planet-sized supercomputer known as the Well of Souls that builds our reality on top of an underlying one of greater complexity but smaller size. The computer was built by a now-extinct race, the Markovians, who developed the Well of Souls with the goal of creating a new species that would transcend their own. The Well World is the planet that houses the Well of Souls, and it exists within the original Markovian reality. Its surface was used as an experimental site where the Markovians tested their species designs before sending the successful ones into the new universe to populate planets. Humans are one of many such designed species who now live in the "real" world. During the time period of the novels, the Well World has been abandoned and left on its own for an unknown length of time. Jack Lukeman (born Seán Loughman 11 February 1973), usually simply known as Jack L, is an Irish songwriter, musician, record producer, vocal artist and broadcaster. History A native of Athy Co. ''The Jupiter Theft'' is a 1977 science fiction novel by American writer Donald Moffitt, re-printed in 2003 with a new afterword. Plot summary The initial part of the novel mixes near-future thriller and disaster novel scenarios that focusses on the discovery of a moving gamma-ray sources headed towards Earth from the direction of Cygnus X-1. The diversion of a Chinese-American joint Jupiter mission to investigate the new Solar System intruder. The Chinese and Americans are mutually antagonistic politically, espionage, and suspicion must be overcome for the Jupiter Mission to go ahead. Once the Mission intercepts the intruder, the story shifts into an alien contact scenario. The "intruder" is actually the silicate core of a Jovian planet which is orbited by a moon and five immense alien spacecraft. Donald Moffitt
Donald Moffitt (July 20, 1931December 10, 2014) was an American author who wrote a number of science fiction novels. Most famous among these are ''The Genesis Quest'' and '' Second Genesis''. While he was the author of many titles under his own name he also used the pseudonyms Paul Kenyon, Victor Sondheim, and Paul King. In the 1950s, Moffitt published approximately 100 short stories under 15 or more pen names (Wilson MacDonald, James D’Indy, and an assortment of others), in magazines like ''Man's Action'', ''Wildcat'', ''Gent'', and ''Monsieur'', while editing trade magazines by day.
