Mirza Aqil Hussain Barlas (29 July 1927 – 21 December 1989) was a lawyer and diplomat, known for his translations from Persian. He was in charge of the Egyptian Embassy in New Delhi India. Background Nawab Mirza Aqil Hussain Barlas was a direct descendant of Qasim Jan, Nawab Qasim Jan, the eponym of Gali Qasim Jan and Qasim Khani Mosque in Ballimaran, New Delhi. His father was Nawab Shakir Hussain Barlas, a barrister from Oxford University, England, and his mother was Bibi Mehmooda Begum, the sister of Ikbal Ali Shah, Sirdar Ikbal Ali Shah. Asma Barlas (born 1950) is a Pakistani-American writer and academic. Her specialties include comparative and international politics, Islam and Qur'anic hermeneutics, and women's studies. Early life and education Barlas was born in Pakistan in 1950. She earned a bachelor of arts in English literature and philosophy from Kinnaird College and a master's degree in journalism from the University of the Punjab. She also holds a master's degree and Ph.D. in international studies from the University of Denver. Career Barlas was one of the first women to be inducted into the foreign service in 1976. Six years later, she was dismissed on the orders of General Zia ul Haq. She worked briefly as assistant editor of the opposition newspaper ''The Muslim'' before receiving political asylum in the United States in 1983. Cemil Sait Barlas
Cemil Sait Barlas (1905 – 10 October 1964) was a Turkish judge, politician and journalist. He served as government minister. Life Cemil Sait was born in İstanbul, Ottoman Empire in 1905. His father Mehmet Sait was a judge. After graduating from Istanbul University, Faculty of Law in 1929, he went to Germany, where he obtained a doctoral degree from Heidelberg University. After returning to Turkey, and served as a judge, a courthouse inspector and legal advisor at Etibank a state owner bank. He married Emine Şahingiray, who gave birth to two sons and a daughter. One of his sons, Mehmet Barlas, is a journalist. Barlas died in Hendek, Sakarya Province on 10 October 1964 due to a traffic accident. John Barlas
John Evelyn Barlas (13 July 1860 – 15 August 1914), pseudonym Evelyn Douglas, was a Scottish poet and political activist of the late nineteenth century. He was a member of the decadent movement in literature, as well as a revolutionary socialist in politics. Eight books of his Swinburne-influenced verse were published between 1884 and 1893, including 1885's ''the Bloody Heart'', 1887's ''Phantasmagoria: Dream-Fugues'' and 1889's ''Love Sonnets''. Serpil Barlas (1957 – 20 February 2021) was a Turkish actress and singer. Biography Serpil was born in Istanbul to Kazım Polat and music soloist Aysel İpar. She began her acting and singing career in the 1960s and recorded 45 different tracks between 1976 and 1978. That year, she competed to represent Turkey in the Eurovision Song Contest, but was placed below the eventual representatives Nazar and Nilüfer. She then moved to the United States and lived there for 15 years. Upon her return to Turkey in 1993, the HIV/AIDS epidemic and the Bosnian Genocide had become central issues in the region. Alongside fellow musician , she recorded "Benim Adım İnsan", "Sahipsiz Çocuklar", and "Bosna", which aimed to give widespread publicity to these issues.
