Barbary Coast is the term used by Europeans from the 16th until the 19th century to refer to the coastal regions of what is now Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya. Battle Of The Barbary Coast
The Battle of the Barbary Coast was a minor naval engagement that took place off in the Barbary Coast not far from the Gibraltar Strait, on July 26, 1592 during the Anglo-Spanish War. The hard fought action by an English merchant galleon in the ''Amity of London'' captained by Thomas White resulted in the capture of two Spanish ships which included a galleon despite them being outnumbered four to one. ''The Last Night of the Barbary Coast'' (1913) was an early example of the exploitation film, showing what was purported to be the last night of the Barbary Coast red-light section of San Francisco. In reality, the Barbary Coast wasn't shut down until 1917. The film, directed by Hal Mohr and Sol Lesser, is now considered a lost film. Mohr (a native of San Francisco himself), later an Academy Award winner, did the cinematography, and Lesser went on to become a Hollywood producer. ''Barbary-Coast Bunny'' is a 1956 Warner Bros. '' Looney Tunes'' cartoon short directed by Chuck Jones and written by Tedd Pierce. The short was released on July 21, 1956, and stars Bugs Bunny.
