Barbara J. Thompson
Barbara June Thompson is an American solar physicist. She is a scientist at Goddard Space Flight Center where she researches coronal mass ejections and the dynamics of coronal structures. Thompson was the project scientist for NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory mission through development and early flight. Education Thompson completed a B.A. in physics and mathematics with a minor in geology at University of Pennsylvania in 1991. In 1996, she earned a Ph.D. in physics from University of Minnesota. Her dissertation was titled ''The role of inertial Alfvén waves in auroral particle acceleration''. The Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) is a major NASA space research laboratory located approximately northeast of Washington, D.C. in Greenbelt, Maryland, United States. Established on May 1, 1959 as NASA's first space flight center, GSFC employs approximately 10,000 civil servants and contractors.
