Barbara Imperiali
Barbara Imperiali (b. January 1, 1957) is a Professor of Biology and Chemistry at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Affiliate Member of the Broad Institute. She is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry. Education and early career Imperiali was raised in England and attended the Southbank School in Caterham in Surrey, followed by Coloma Grammar School in Croydon where she specialized in studying the sciences. She received her Bachelor of Science in Medicinal Chemistry from the University College London in 1979. She attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where she received her Doctor of Philosophy in synthetic organic chemistry in 1983. She joined the lab of Satoru Masamune, working to develop and apply new techniques to synthesize a class of antibiotic chemicals known as ansamycin. Fluorescence is the emission of light by a substance that has absorbed light or other electromagnetic radiation. It is a form of luminescence. In molecular biology and genetics, translation is the process in which ribosomes in the cytoplasm or endoplasmic reticulum synthesize proteins after the process of transcription (biology), transcription of DNA to RNA in the cell's nucleus (cell), nucleus. Ellen Henrietta Swallow Richards (December 3, 1842 – March 30, 1911) was an American industrial and safety engineer, environmental chemist, and university faculty member in the United States during the 19th century.
