Barbara Frietchie (1915 Film)
''Barbara Frietchie'' is a 1915 in film, 1915 silent film, silent drama film directed by Herbert Blaché and starring Mary Miles Minter. It is based upon the 1899 play ''Barbara Frietchie'' by Clyde Fitch, which was in turn inspired by the John Greenleaf Whittier poem of the same name. As with many of Minter's movies, the film is thought to be a lost film. Plot The film is set in Frederick, Maryland, during the American Civil War. As described in film magazines, young Barbara Frietchie (Minter), just turned eighteen, lives with her grandmother and namesake (Whiffen) in a town occupied by Northern troops. She falls for Captain Trumbull (Coombs), a Union officer, to the disappointment of her father (Sealy), but her grandmother supports the match. When the Confederate forces re-take the town, Captain Trumbull is shot and severely wounded by Barbara's brother (Scott), a Confederate officer. Herbert Blaché
Herbert Blaché (5 October 1882 – 23 October 1953), born Herbert Reginald Gaston Blaché-Bolton was a British-born American film director, producer and screenwriter, born of a French father. He directed more than 50 films between 1912 and 1929. Biography Blaché was born in London, England. His father was a French hatmaker originally from Mont-de-Marsan, while his mother was an English actress, Elizabeth Bolton. In 1907 he married filmmaking pioneer Alice Guy, head of production with the French Gaumont Film Company. Their marriage meant that Alice had to resign from her position working with Gaumont. Blanche Whiffen
Blanche Galton Whiffen, known on stage as Mrs. Thomas Whiffen, (1845–1936) was an American actress born in London. She was educated in France; made her stage début at the Royalty Theatre, London, in 1865; came to America in 1868; and toured the United States under John Templeton's management. In 1879 she played Buttercup in the first American production of Gilbert and Sullivan's ''Pinafore''. ''Photoplay'' was one of the first American film (another name for ''photoplay'') fan magazines. It was founded in 1911 in Chicago, the same year that J. Stuart Blackton founded '' Motion Picture Story,'' a magazine also directed at fans. For most of its run, ''Photoplay'' was published by Macfadden Publications. In 1921 ''Photoplay'' established what is considered the first significant annual movie award. The magazine ceased publication in 1980. History ''Photoplay'' began as a short fiction magazine concerned mostly with the plots and characters of films at the time and was used as a promotional tool for those films. In 1915, Julian Johnson and James R. Quirk became the editors (though Quirk had been vice president of the magazine since its inception), and together they created a format which would set a precedent for almost all celebrity magazines that followed. William Armiger Sealy Lewis (1851 – March 19, 1931), known professionally as Lewis Sealy, was an Irish actor and a film exhibitor. Career Sealy was a character actor. A native of Ireland, he worked on the London stage for years. He co-wrote and performed in the play ''A Heathen Goddess'' at the West London Theatre in 1894. In the 1890s, he was a film exhibitor, known for the "Royal Cinematoscope", which was the name under which he exhibited Birt Acres' Kineopticon. He first came to New York in 1908, working as a stage manager and occasional actor as he had in London. His first play in New York was ''Captain Brassbound's Conversion''. He had been a stage director for Lily Langtry and Olga Nethersole.. Having left family in Ireland and England, he apparently returned to work as a stage actor in London, before travelling once more to New York around 1915 to begin a career in film.
