Barbados Gold Cup
The Barbados Gold Cup is a Barbadian Group I Thoroughbred horse race run annually in late February/early March since 1982 at the Garrison Savannah Racetrack in Bridgetown, Barbados. Contested over a turf course at a distance of 1,800 meters (8.95 furlongs), it is open to horses, age three or older. The most important event on the Barbados horse racing calendar, it was inaugurated in 1982 with the intention of attracting the top horses from Caribbean countries. Since 1997 the race has been sponsored by the Sandy Lane Hotel. In 1999, nineteen-year-old Attie S. Joseph III became the youngest owner to win the Gold Cup. In 2007, Elizabeth Deane became the first female trainer to saddle a winner of the Barbados Gold Cup. The race was not run in 2021 and 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but returned in March 2023. Garrison Savannah Racetrack
The Garrison Savannah in the country of Barbados, is a horse racing venue located within the Garrison Historic Area, just outside the capital-city Bridgetown. A clockwise grass course, the Garrison Savannah is known internationally for the annual Barbados Gold Cup for Thoroughbreds which takes place on the six-furlong track around the perimeter of the green. The racetrack also is host to the annual Barbados Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing series. Racing has taken place at the location since the days that a British garrison was stationed there. In 2012 a network of subterranean tunnels were found to exist below the area. Jockey
A jockey is someone who rides horses in horse racing or steeplechase racing, primarily as a profession. The word also applies to camel riders in camel racing. The word "jockey" originated from England and was used to describe the individual who rode horses in racing. They must be light, typically around a weight of 100-120 lb., and physically fit. They are typically self-employed and are paid a small fee from the horse trainer and a percentage of the horse's winnings. Jockeys are mainly male, though there are some well-known female jockeys too. The job has a very high risk of debilitating or life-threatening injuries. Etymology The word is by origin a diminutive of ''jock'', the Northern English or Scots colloquial equivalent of the first name ''John'', which is also used generically for "boy" or "fellow" (compare ''Jack'', ''Dick''), at least since 1529. Sandy Hawley
Desmond Sandford "Sandy" Hawley, (born April 16, 1949 in Oshawa, Ontario) is a Canadian Hall of Fame jockey. Sandy Hawley decided to be a jockey when he was a 17-year-old boy, hotwalking, grooming and excise horses at a Woodbine racetrack in Toronto Ontario. Two years later, when he was 19 years old, he rode his first race at Woodbine race track as a Jockey. Then he became a regular rider at racetracks in Ontario and then rode at racetracks on the East Coast of the United States. Hawley became the first jockey to ever lead the Canadian standings in a full season as an apprentice. In 1969, a time when there were no Sovereign or Eclipse Awards for jockeys, Hawley rode 230 winners, the most that year of any apprentice jockey in North America. He went on to race in the United States where he led all jockeys in victories for the years 1970, 1972, 1973 and 1976. Richard Quinn (jockey)
Thomas Richard Quinn, better known as Richard Quinn (born 2 December 1961) is a Scottish jockey. Life and career After leaving Bannockburn High School in 1977, aged 15, he moved to York to work as a stable lad. This career led to Quinn moving to work for Paul Cole in Lambourn for 17 years (1981–1998). After some years as a freelance jockey, he joined Henry Cecil in Newmarket (2000–2004). Quinn has raced with owners Prince Fahd bin Salman (1990–1991) and John L. Dunlop. Among other victories, Quinn has achieved 26 victories at Goodwood Racecourse. He briefly retired in 2006, only to return to racing early the next year. Quinn now lives in Great Shefford. Simon Husbands (born July 16, 1969, in Bridgetown, Barbados) is a jockey in Thoroughbred horse race, Thoroughbred horse racing. Husbands began racing in his native Barbados in the mid nineteen eighties then a few years later relocated to Fort Erie Racetrack in Fort Erie, Ontario, Canada where he earned his first North American win in 1990. Riding from a base at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto since 2000, among his victories, Simon Husbands has won the Shady Well Stakes, Shady Well, Frost King Stakes, Frost King and Victoria Park Stakes. In 1998 he traveled to his homeland where he won the country's most prestigious race, the Barbados Gold Cup. Kenneth L. "Ken" Ramsey (born 1935) and Sarah Kathern "Kitten" Ramsey (February 5, 1939 – May 29, 2022) are horse breeders and owners of Thoroughbred race horses. They have multiple graded stakes winners, three Breeders' Cup winners, and the Ramseys themselves have won multiple Eclipse Awards for outstanding owner and breeder. Ken and Sarah own Ramsey Farm, a 1,200 acre horse breeding operation in Nicholasville, Kentucky, and have raced horses at tracks throughout the United States.
