Baptist Union Of Sweden
The Baptist Union of Sweden ( sv, Svenska Baptistsamfundet) is the oldest of several Baptist bodies in Sweden. The first-known Baptist church in Sweden was organized on September 21, 1848, in Vallersvik, where a group of people committed the first-known Baptist baptism in Sweden. The Conventicle Act was in effect at the time, outlawing all religious meetings other than those of the Lutheran Church of Sweden. The new movement's leader, F.O. Nilsson, was exiled. Others were fined or jailed. A few years later, in 1858, the law was abolished, and religious groups other than the official state church (free churches) were allowed to work. Swedish Free Church Council
The Swedish Free Church Council ( sv, Sveriges frikyrkosamråd) is an association of free churches in Sweden. It is part of the Christian Council of Sweden ( sv, Sveriges kristna råd) . The Swedish Free Church Council was established in 1992. In total the member churches have about 250,000 members, with almost double that figure involved in the churches' activities. The largest member church is the Uniting Church in Sweden, with approximately 85,000 members. The free churches belong to various Protestant denominations: Baptists, Methodists, Reformed, Pentecostal etc. Most of the free church denominations in Sweden began during the nineteenth century when an evangelical revival broke out. Religion in Sweden has, over the years, become increasingly diverse. Christianity was the religion of virtually all of the Swedish population from the 12th to the early 20th century, but it has rapidly declined throughout the late 20th and early 21st century. Christianity came to Sweden as early as the 9th century mainly as a result of an expansion in trade. The ancient Nordic religions were slowly replaced. Several centuries later all monarchs were Christian and Christianity became the established official religion. The church belonged to the Catholic Church until 1527 when the Swedish state church was established as a Protestant church based on Lutheran principles, following the Protestant Reformation enacted by Martin Luther which converted most of Germanic Europe. The Mission Covenant Church of Sweden ( sv, Svenska Missionskyrkan), founded in 1878, was a Swedish evangelical free church. The Baptist World Alliance (BWA) is the largest international Baptist organization with an estimated 51 million people in 2022 with 246 member bodies in 128 countries and territories. The European Baptist Federation (EBF) is a federation of 59 Baptist associations and is one of six regional fellowships in the Baptist World Alliance. The headquarters is in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Bethel Seminary (Stockholm)
Bethel Seminary (Swedish: ) was the Baptist Union of Sweden's seminary for training pastors from 1866 to 1994. History The 1866 conference of the Swedish Baptists, which would eventually lead to the creation of the Baptist Union of Sweden in 1889, decided to found a seminary for the new and growing movement, calling it Bethel Seminary (). It opened in 1866 and Colonel Oscar Broady of the Union Army was the seminary's first rector. Swedish Baptist pioneer Anders Wiberg helped raise funds through the American Baptist Missionary Union to support the seminary in its early years. In 1905, the seminary had four years with about 40 students each and four regular and two adjunct professors. During the first 40 years, 400 students had attended classes.
