Banyen Rakgan
Banyen Rakkaen ( th, บานเย็น รากแก่น; ) (born on October 14, 1952 to an Isan family in Ubon Ratchathani province in the Isan region of Northeast Thailand) is a ''Thai mor lam'' and ''Thai luk thung'' singer. Banyen Rakkaen is known as the "Queen of mor lam" and after 45 years in the business she was named a National Artist in 2014 for her contribution to folk music. Biography She is also a student of National Artist, Master Chaweewan Dumnern. Banyen was the first national ''mor lam'' star, whose appearances on television in the 1980s brought the form to an audience beyond its northeastern heartland. She bridges the gap between traditional and modern ''mor lam'', normally appearing in traditional clothing but using electrified instruments and singing ''luk thung'' and dance-influenced songs. Ubon Ratchathani
Ubon Ratchathani ( th, อุบลราชธานี, ) is one of the four major cities of Isan (with Khorat/Nakhon Ratchasima, Udon Thani, and Khon Kaen), also known as the "big four of Isan." The city is on the Mun River in the southeast of the Isan region of Thailand, and is located away from Bangkok. It is known as Ubon () for short. The name means "royal lotus city". Ubon is the administrative center of Ubon Ratchathani Province. As of 2006, the Ubon Ratchathani urban area had a population of about 200,000. Northeast Thailand or Isan (Isan/ th, อีสาน, ; lo, ອີສານ; also written as Isaan, Isarn, Issarn, Issan, Esan, or Esarn; from Pali ''īsānna'' or Sanskrit ईशान्य ''īśānya'' "northeast") consists of 20 provinces in the northeastern region of Thailand. Mor Lam
Mor lam ( Lao: ໝໍລຳ; Thai/Isan: หมอลำ ; ) is a traditional Lao form of song in Laos and Isan. ''Mor lam'' means 'expert song', or 'expert singer', referring to the music or artist respectively. Other romanisations used include mor lum, maw lam, maw lum, moh lam, mhor lum, and molum. In Laos, the music is known simply as lam (ລຳ); mor lam (ໝໍລຳ) refers to the singer. The characteristic feature of ''lam'' singing is the use of a flexible melody tailored to the tones of the words in the text. Traditionally, the tune was developed by the singer as an interpretation of a '' klon'' poem and accompanied primarily by the ''khene'' (a free reed mouth organ). The National Artist ( th, ศิลปินแห่งชาติ, , ) is a title given annually by the Office of the National Culture Commission of Thailand, recognizing notable Thai artists in the area of intangible cultural heritage such as literature, fine arts, visual arts, applied arts (architecture, design) and performing arts (Thai dance, international dance, puppetry, shadow play, Thai music, international music, drama and film).
