Banteer
Banteer () is a village in north County Cork, Ireland located in the Civic Parish of Clonmeen in the Barony of Duhallow. It is near the town of Mallow. Banteer is within the Cork North-West Dáil constituency. History In 1651, the Battle of Knocknaclashy, the last pitched battle of the Irish Confederate Wars, took place near the village, when English Parliamentarians under Roger Boyle, 1st Earl of Orrery defeated an Irish force under Donagh MacCarthy, Viscount Muskerry. Organizations Local sporting organizations include a Gaelic football club known simply as "Lyre" after a nearby village and a hurling club known as Banteer. The Glen Theatre is a community-owned and managed centre for the arts. The theatre was originally Banteer National School (built 1840). Banteer GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club which is based in the village of Banteer in the North West of County Cork, Ireland. The club plays hurling and is affiliated with Lyre Gaelic Football Club from the same parish. Founded in 1887, the club competes in the Duhallow Junior A Hurling Championship. Banteer is a dual clubs, competing in a similar level in both football and hurling. However, the hurling team has experienced more success, winning the Duhallow Junior A Hurling Championship on 8 occasions, most recently in 2017. By comparison, the football team has won the Duhallow Junior A Football Championship on 3 occasions (2 under the name of Lyre), most recently in 2013. Lyre GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club which takes its name from the nearby village of Lyre, County Cork, and is based in the village of Banteer in the north-west of County Cork, Ireland. The club plays Football and is affiliated with Banteer Hurling Club from the same parish. Founded in 1899, the club competes in the Duhallow Junior A Football Championship. Their first team competes in the Duhallow Junior A Football Championship and the Duhallow Junior A Football League. Mallow Railway Station
Mallow railway station is an Irish station on the Dublin-Cork railway line, Mallow-Tralee railway line and Cork Suburban Rail ( Cork Kent, Cobh and Midleton). Facilities Mallow's main station building is located on the south side of the railway tracks, nearest to the town, and is constructed from the grey stone typical of many Irish stations. Áine Collins (born 9 September 1969) is a former Irish Fine Gael politician who served as a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Cork North-West constituency from 2011 to 2016. Duhallow () is a barony located in the north-western part of County Cork, Ireland. Legal context Baronies were created after the Norman invasion of Ireland as divisions of counties and were used in the administration of justice and the raising of revenue. While baronies continue to be officially defined units, they have been administratively obsolete since 1898. However, they continue to be used in land registration and in specification, such as in planning permissions. Denis Horgan (18 May 1871 – 2 June 1922) was a champion Ireland, Irish Athletics (sport), athlete and weight thrower, born in Banteer, County Cork, who competed mainly in the shot put. Biography Shortly after setting a world's record of 48 feet 2 inches with the 16 pound shot at Cobh, Queenstown, in County Cork, Ireland in 1897, Horgan visited the U.S., and in 1900, he joined the Greater New York Irish Athletic Association, the predecessor of the Irish American Athletic Club for a brief period. In 1905, he joined the rival New York Athletic Club. In 1906, Horgan set the world's record for the 28 pound shot, with a distance of 35 feet, 4.5 inches at the Ancient Order of Hibernians games held at Celtic Park in Queens, New York. Frank Crowley (politician)
Frank Crowley (29 May 1939 – 16 August 2022) was an Irish Fine Gael politician who served as a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Cork North-West constituency from 1981 to 1997. Crowley first stood for election in the Cork Mid constituency at the 1977 general election. However, in the landslide victory for Fianna Fáil which saw Jack Lynch returned as Taoiseach with a 20-seat majority, Fianna Fáil took three of the five seats in Cork Mid, and Crowley was unsuccessful. The battle of Knocknaclashy (also known as Knockbrack), took place in County Cork in southern Ireland in 1651. In it, an Irish Confederate force led by Viscount Muskerry was defeated by an English Parliamentarian force under Lord Broghill. It was the final pitched battle of the Irish Confederate Wars and one of the last of the Wars of the Three Kingdoms. Campaign Most of the province of Munster had fallen to Cromwell's forces in 1649-50. Oliver Cromwell had led an assault by the New Model Army from the south-east of Ireland, while Roger Boyle, Lord Broghill (later 1st Earl of Orrery) had inspired a mutiny among the English Royalist garrison in Cork, causing them to defect to the Parliamentarians.
