Bantam (poultry)
A bantam is any small variety of fowl, usually of chicken or duck. Most large chicken breeds and several breeds of duck have a bantam counterpart, which is much smaller than the standard-sized fowl, but otherwise similar in most or all respects. A true bantam chicken is naturally small and has no large counterpart. Etymology The word ''bantam'' derives from the name of the seaport city of Bantam in western Java, Indonesia. European sailors restocking on live fowl for sea journeys found the small native breeds of chicken in Southeast Asia to be useful, and any such small poultry came to be known as a ''bantam''. Bantam is an unincorporated community in Clermont County, Ohio, United States. It is the location of Bethel Methodist Church, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The community is located in northwest Tate Township along Old State Route 125 (Bantam Road) and South Bantam Road, 4.2 miles northwest of Bethel. SS ''Bantam '' was built by N.V. Machinefabriek & Scheepswerf van P. Smit Jr. of Rotterdam, Netherlands in 1930 of 3322 gross weight and operated by Koninklijke Paketvaart-Maatschappij. ''Bantam'', under charter, became a part of the initial United States Army local fleet in Australia, was severely damaged 28 March 1943 in New Guinea and eventually scuttled off Sydney. Wartime operation The ship was one of the original twenty-one vessels that reached Australia chartered by the Chief Quartermaster, U.S. Army Forces in Australia (USAFIA) on 26 March 1942 with long term details to be negotiated at higher levels. MS ''Bantam '', , was built by N.V. Machinefabriek & Scheepswerf van P. Smit Jr. of Rotterdam, Netherlands in 1939 for Koninklijke Rotterdamsche Lloyd. It was the second ship of the name, the other being of of Koninklijke Paketvaart-Maatschappij and sunk 28 March 1943, from this builder operating in the same region and during overlapping times. MS ''Bantam '' operated under charter by both the United States and the United Kingdom during World War II. It was used in trans-Atlantic convoys from and to New York City on a regular basis from April 1944 to April 1945. The ship was returned to the original owners in 1946. After wartime service the ship was returned to Koninklijke Rotterdamsche Lloyd in 1946 and resumed cargo and passenger service in the Indies as the colony became Indonesia until sold in 1964. The BSA Bantam is a two-stroke unit construction motorcycle that was produced by the Birmingham Small Arms Company (BSA) from 1948 (as a 125 cc) until 1971 (as a 175 cc). Exact production figures are unknown, but it was over 250,000 and some estimates place the number closer to half a million. The Trinity College Bantams are the varsity and club athletic teams of Trinity College, a selective liberal arts college located in Hartford, Connecticut.
