The banns of marriage, commonly known simply as the "banns" or "bans" (from a Middle English word meaning "proclamation", rooted in Frankish and thence in Old French), are the public announcement in a Christian parish church, or in the town council, of an impending marriage between two specified persons. It is commonly associated with the Catholic Church, the Church of Sweden (Lutheran), the Church of England (Anglican), and with other Christian denominations whose traditions are similar. In 1983, the Catholic Church removed the requirement for banns and left it to individual national bishops' conferences to decide whether to continue the practice, but in most Catholic countries the banns are still published. The purpose of banns is to enable anyone to raise any canonical or civil legal impediments to the marriage, so as to prevent marriages that are invalid. The River Bann (from ga, An Bhanna, meaning "the goddess"; Ulster-Scots: ''Bann Wattèr'') is one of the longest rivers in Northern Ireland, its length, Upper and Lower Bann combined, being 129 km (80 mi). However, the total length of the River Bann, including its path through the 30 km (19 mi) long Lough Neagh is 159 km (99 mi). Another length of the River Bann given is 90 mi. The river winds its way from the southeast corner of Northern Ireland to the northwest coast, pausing in the middle to widen into Lough Neagh. The River Bann catchment has an area of 5,775 km2. The River Bann has a mean discharge rate of 92 m3/s. According to C. Michael Hogan, the Bann River Valley is a settlement area for some of the first human arrivals in Ireland after the most recent glacial retreat. Bann Rowing Club is a rowing club in Coleraine, Northern Ireland. It is situated on the east bank of the Lower Bann river in Hanover Place south of the Old Town Bridge. Founded in 1842, Bann is one of the oldest rowing clubs in all of Ireland. The Club competes regularly in national regattas across Ireland including the annual National Championships, Cork. River Bann (Wexford)
The River Bann is a large river in County Wexford, in the southeast of Ireland. It rises in the southern slopes of Croghan Mountain in north Wexford on the County Wicklow border. It flows south and is joined by the ''Blackwater Stream'' near the village of Hollyfort. Veering southwest it passes under the R725, then continuing southwestwards it flows beneath the N11 national primary route at the village of Camolin. It is crossed by the Dublin - Wexford railway four times as it flows past the town of Ferns before joining the River Slaney north of Enniscorthy. In the 1950s a reservoir was built at Ballythomas to supply water to the town of Gorey, County Wexford. Before that, its banks regularly spilled over and made a lot of swamp land on its route. Bann is a municipality in the district of Kaiserslautern, in Rhineland-Palatinate, western Germany. Located in the Steinalb valley with the Palatinate Forest bordering it to the east. Blair Cameron Bann (born 26 February 1988) is a Canadian male volleyball player. He is a member of the Canada men's national volleyball team and German club Düren, a participant in the 2016 Summer Olympics, and a gold and silver medalist at the NORCECA Men's Volleyball Championship in 2015 and 2013. Personal life Blair was born in Edmonton, Alberta to parents Robert and Gisele Bann. He started playing volleyball at the age of 14 for his school team, Ecole J.H. Stephen Bann
Stephen Bann CBE, British Academy, FBA (born 1 August 1942 in Manchester, England) is the Emeritus Professor of History of Art at the University of Bristol. He attended Winchester College and King's College, Cambridge, attaining his Doctor of Philosophy, PhD in 1967. He was subsequently appointed Professor of Modern Cultural Studies at the University of Kent, University of Kent at Canterbury, and later appointed to the Chair in History of Art at Bristol in 2000.
